UPSTARTS MONTH: GRAYDON CREED

Post by Dean Clayton »

Next on our Upstarts Month is the only human member of the team and the one with much higher ambitions than simply playing the Gamesmaster's twisted games. As an aspiring presidential candidate, his anti-mutant platform helped him win a lot of support. Unfortunately for him, the fact his parents were two of the most notorious and deadly mutants would forever be a shameful secret to him. Read about the rise and fall of one of the X-Men's many anti-mutant political foes...Graydon Creed

Thanks for the spotlight!

I've always enjoyed the human enemy characters of the X-men. I'm a bit surprised they never pulled out a storyline about Graydon being a repressed mutant. Not that I wanted something like that, just that it seems a writer would have done so at some point.
Books to be excited for:
Immortal X-men, X-men Red, She-Hulk, The Fall of X

I know this might be controversial but I think you look at 2004-2012 and I think you got way less wasted story potential (the biggest missed opportunity was the lack of focus on the specificity of living on Utopia) than you do with everything from 1992-2000...like Graydon Creed and the Upstarts? MISSED OPPORTUNITIES!
From The Ashes Books I like: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Exceptional X-Men, X-Force, Dazzler, and NYX…so far, so good.

When I wrote this spotlight it became obvious very early on that the writers who came up with Graydon had a basic idea in mind for him but no long term plan. He is named Creed yet despises his father and there’s never any explanation for his name, especially since he didn’t know who his father was until he was about 12. Mystique’s involvement in his upbringing varied from issue to issue.

The human enemies like Graydon tend to follow the same path. We had Robert Kelly in the late 80s/early 90s, then Graydon came alone in the mid to late 90s. Even recently we had a few in X-Men Gold and the recent Uncanny run. Generic human politician characters.
Everybody is entitled you their opinion...but yours is wrong.

I never found anything of interest in him, but his X-Terminated version is just... whuff.
