Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, reporting: I met Carol Danvers on the worst day of her life. She had been beaten, her powers and memories stripped away, her body left for dead. She became my best friend. Over the years, I've seen her struggle to rebuild the life she lost and the things that were taken from her. She has stumbled and faltered, but now she has reclaimed her confidence, reclaimed the stars, and taken on the mantle of the hero who first inspired her to become CAPTAIN MARVEL.

Carol certainly was a big update. She has been everywhere since House of M. I think Marvel were on to a winner with her costume and name change.

Great work to all involved.

Never heard of them.

(Ok, that’s an overstatement. I think I’ve heard of them, but don’t know who they are. Is Marvel Boy the telekinetic from the original New Warriors?)

Genis-Vell is the Captain Marvel of the 90's and 00's. Mar-Vell's artificially-engineered son who was bonded to Rick Jones for a time during the well-received Peter David series. He later become Photon of the New Thunderbolts before being killed by Zemo in Thunderbolts #100.

Phyla-Vell was a minor character from Genis' run, his sister from an alternate reality that overlapped permanently with Earth-616. She had a relatively high-profile relationship with Moondragon, appearing as Quasar in the DnA era of cosmic stories such as Annihilation and the first modern Guardians of the Galaxy. Killed by Thanos when that era came to an end for the movie era of cosmic stories to begin.

Noh-Varr is the 7th Marvel Boy, after 2 Timely era Boys, Atlas era's Boy who became part of Agents of Atlas (III), Wendell Vaughn who became Quasar (IV), Vance Astrovik of the New Warriors (V), and a minor character who assumed Vance's codename when Vance became Justice (VI).

Noh-Varr's Marvel Boy was introduced in a Grant Morrison penned limited series as a young Kree fighting against the human establishment. He became Captain Marvel under Osborn's Dark Avengers before becoming the Protector for a time with the real Avengers. He has since returned to being Marvel Boy in the pages of Young Avengers and Royals.

Whoa. No wonder I had no idea. Only a brain like Doctor Doom could keep track of all that.

We're actually brainstorming a new type of article/feature to help visitors keep track of the most reused codenames.

The Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel/Marvel Boy/Marvel Man/Quasar/Martyr/Justice/Moonstone/Meteorite/Photon/Pulsar/Spectrum/Protector one is just one of the most confusing.

I look forward to perusing that.

I’m also eagerly anticipating the release of a chart showing the complete Avengers roster as it evolves over time.

EDIT: that’s meant as a supportive show of enthusiasm for your hard work, not thankless pressure to do more.

Well, it's no chart, but we did do a thing today. Hope it helps!

It's true that the Avengers have more of a tendency to share and trade codenames more so than the X-men. I've never really thought about it until now. There's been four Hawkeyes that I can think of, three Thors three (maybe four if you count USAgent) Captain Americas, two Ronins, two Goliaths, the list goes on...

I have to Monolith for a second here...

4 Thors (Odinson, Red Norvell, Eric Masterson, Jane Foster)
8 Caps (Rogers, Spirit of '76, Patriot, Grand Director, Roscoe Simons, USAgent, Winter Soldier, Falcon)
4 Ronins (Hawkeye, Echo, Red Guardian, Blade)
5 Goliaths (Pym, Barton, Josten, Bill Foster and his nephew)

And a partridge in a pear tree!

I was only counting the characters that I knew of that had been Avengers, from the new glossary, but when you add the non Avenger characters that also use the name that bumps the number right up. 8 Captain Americas? Wow!
Also:
2 Red Hulks (Ross and the other guy from USAvengers)
6 Spider-Men (Parker, Reilly, Gargan, Ai Apaec, Doc Ock, Morales)
4 Wolverines ( Logan, Daken, Gorgon, X-23)

When is D-Man going to get to be Cap? It’s not fair that he never gets a turn.

He just got to be a DC Universe visiting dragon...I'd say that's a little step above being Captain America lol...

I understands the words but the actual sentence makes no sense to me  . D-man became a dragon that went to the DC universe?

Didn't Khn'nr also used the Captain Marvel identity (re: Secret Wars Captain Marvel) between Phyla-Vell and Noh-Varr, and directly influenced Noh-Varr's adoption of the name making Carol Captain Marvel VII, rather than VI?

Imposters aren't a part of the numbering system. Otherwise the Chameleon and Mysterio would be Spider-Man II and III.

As what point do successors stop being imposters and start being accredited in their own right? I ask as there was no 'active' Captain Marvel at the time of Khn'nr's activities, and even after his true memories were revealed to him he accepted the 'role' of Captain Marvel as hero rather than a sleeper agent.

And in the classic "This Man, This Monster!" from Fantastic Four #51, an unknown scientist assumed the appearance of Ben Grimm. He had a vendetta against Reed Richards, but was put in a situation to rescue Reed from the Negative Zone. He accepted this task and acted as a hero, saving Reed but dying himself him the process.

That doesn't make him The Thing II.

Khn'nr was not an active hero as Captain Marvel, operating in his own name or his own right. He was a double agent who changed his mind and died in the same story. Had he survived Secret Invasion, identified himself publically or semi-publically as not Mar-Vell, and assumed the role of Captain Marvel honestly and not as a subversion, then he would qualify.
