Update On...TAROT

Post by Monolith »

Bonjour! When we last saw the original Hellions it was...complicated. Something about the True Friend and techno-virus nonsense? We think? While it's rare for the Hellions to appear individually, this one is a special case, having returned to life separate from the other original Hellions once before, she made an unexpected return at a psychic fair where she was attempting to steal from the attendees. Then, when the great nation of Krakoa was established, the Hellions regrouped - only there was another group of Hellions in town, too...check in here on the misadventures of... TAROT!

In universe, it’s odd that Emma Frost isn’t closer to these former Hellions. She treats Kitty Pryde like an estranged daughter. But she was probably Marie’s surrogate parent for over a decade.

She was also the surrogate mother to the likes of Jubilee, Monet, and Husk in Generation X. Why don't they interact more?

Husk interacts with nobody. Probably the most underused 90s big name mutant.

Jubes and Monet just grew in different directions from Emma. In real life, different children develop different relationships with their parents as they grow up.
From The Ashes Books I like: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Exceptional X-Men, X-Force, Dazzler, and NYX…so far, so good.

I never got the sense that Jubilee or Paige felt comfortable around her (except that issue where they ate ice cream). I am surprised that there haven’t been more interactions between Monet & Emma.

Monet and Emma Frost have similar personality traits, which is why they never get along.....

Also, in X-Factor Investigations, Monet (indirectly) stated that she always avoid her.

Catseye even viewed Emma Frost as a mother figure.

understandable. iirc she was basically living as a “stray” prior to becoming a hellion.

Over a decade? Two and a half years tops.
X-Force (1st series) #87 gives us a very good timeline. The issue mentions it as "five years ago" that Christopher Aaronson rejected the White Queen's offer and left the Academy, and also that Tarot (visually the same age as her earliest appearance so mid teens) had joined the Academy only 5 months prior to that. Now, more than a decade can not fit in that 5.5 years window, especially as the Hellions were killed within the first half of that window.

The characterization of that time period's Emma Frost as a "surrogate parent" is also quite off. She was a cold, stern headmistress, gathering potential assets for the Hellfire Club, all the while running her own companies and a school with hundreds of human students as a cover for the Hellions training grounds underneath. Even if she would have had the time, the way she acted back then shows nothing that suggests she was interested in creating a motherly bond with any of her charges. She manipulated Firestar into becoming an assassin, attempted o mind-control Christopher Aaronson and was quite annoyed that the unpredictability of Tarot's power made it hard for her to telepathically nudge her.

While subsequent writes may have mellowed the White Queen's past actions as some form of tough love, her true change only occurred because of the Hellions' death. The White Queen treated the Hellions mainly as disposable underlings, whereas Kitty - who stood up to her from the very first day that they met - might be more of an equal (opponent) in Emma's eyes, especially as she since has spent far more time fighting either against or alongside Kitty than she has ever spent connecting with the Hellions.

Parents can be cold and stern. And you’d be surprised how quickly a bond can form. Emma’s teaching style is invasive. There were few boundaries between she and the hellions. if you’re up for a drinking game, take a shot whenever Emma puts her hand on Empath’s cheeks. Everything the hellions are came from Emma Frost. For many of them, all they know is death and the Massachusetts academy. X-force played fast and lose with a lot of continuity.

If they play fast and loose, since they come after (which is sort of a retcon I guess) that is the continuity now. So Lav’s argument us no less true.
