January 1992 saw Marvel's first openly gay character come out. Two years later, in January 1994, Marvel added to its small list of queer characters in a groundbreaking story by legendary writer Ann Nocenti. Marvel Comics Presents #150-151 debuted Marvel's first openly trans character, a young woman who was persecuted by a shady organization known as the Fortress. This young woman was also a mutant, and Wolverine was sent to rescue her, in a story that saw this young mutant be liberated by Typhoid Mary. Although the story set up an interesting future for Typhoid and the young woman, it would be many years before she would eventually re-appear, fittingly in Marvel's first Marvel Voices Pride issue, now an annual special celebrating Marvel's diverse LGBTQIA+ characters.
