SPOTLIGHT UPDATE...ARCHANGEL

Number 2 in our countdown for the Original Five X-Men Spotlight Updates, we have Warren Worthington III, the Angel and the Archangel. Young Warren arrived in the present to find his older self traumatized and amnesiac, not even answering to the name Warren anymore. Angel tried to distance himself from his future mistakes by accepting and keeping the power of the Black Vortex, giving him fiery energy wings. Kid Cable solved this problem...apparently...by cutting off Angel's cosmic wings and grafting Mimic's mimicked feathered wings onto his back in their place. (It's best not to think about that too closely.) In the present, Warren returned to struggling with his Archangel side, and likely will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Today, we present the Archangel Spotlight update in full!

Yay! The article that brought me to the site all those many years ago. Always feel a tad nostalgic when it updates.

It’s annoying how various writers constantly lean on the duelling Angel/Archangel personalities. The Dark Angel Saga did it really well and then the hippy Angel follow up in WATXM seemed to be taking him in a new direction. Then all of a sudden he’s back to the Archangel persona in Uncanny XMen 5th series. It would be nice if writers would do something new with the character outside of his personas.

Given how Aaron’s run split people, that might have been one of the impetus behind falling back on that maybe?

At least we got rid of hippie teenage Angel with amnesia.

See I didn't mind hippy Angel as it was a new direction for him. Aaron was teasing something different about him with the weapons made of light and the resurrection powers he had. However, he was pretty much dropped from the title halfway through and the plot threads were cast aside. Bunn tied them up in his story that brought AA back. But then AA was thrown into the background of the UXM 5th series run once his little arc was done.
