I'm Ted Bails for 616News and welcome to the first of two specials where we look over the history of the team we know as the Avengers. Delving into their comic book publication history, we're going to cast an eye over their adventures from 1963 all the way through to 2004 in part one of the... Avengers Primer!
Why not contribute to one of our sites? The pay is non existent, but vacation allowance is fantastic!
I have read the Avengers and West Coast up through the Byrne era and skipped everything until Busiek came in. It was interesting to read an explanation of that gap in my knowledge but it seems like I didn't miss much other than Galactic Storm.
Books to be excited for:
Immortal X-men, X-men Red, She-Hulk, The Fall of X
On a more substantive note, it’s a great article; I read it beginning to end and I learned a lot about some of the early material. I’m really looking forward to Kang and Immortus profiles.
One (hopefully constructive) criticism has to do with the Onslought/Heroes Reborn sections. It’s not clear in the article that when these happed that the titles were cancelled and restarted with new numbers. It’s also not clear that the reborn titles happened in a “pocket universe.” Thus, the Thunderbolts story loses some of its context—that the entire first year the Avengers were off in another dimension believed dead from fighting Onslought. Then, the discussion of renumbering comes after and it seems oddly disconnected from the storylines that drove it.

Last sentence of the second-to-last paragraph on page 2: “Perineal” is very definitely not the word you intend to use there. I recommend “perennial.”
Savage Avengers Draft: She-Hulk | Elektra | Echo | Gamora | Rogue | Chun Li | White Widow | Shuri

Yeah, right. Who's be crazy enough to do that?

Not you, I’m sure. You couldn’t possibly know enough about those two characters.

Monolith knows all characters. He's actually a comic book database that gained sentience.
However, even he would be confounded by the continuity nightmare that is Kang and Immortus...surely?
What’s intesetesting is that the Primer was split in half for release but there’s 40 years worth of history in this half alone. The other half will cover about 14 years. It goes to show how much the Avenger line has exploded in recent years...partly due to the films I guess.
Everybody is entitled you their opinion...but yours is wrong.
Great read. I came on board to the Avengers with the Panini British reprints starting around the Perez / Busiek run, specifically around the Ultron family gathering issues where I became aware that the Avengers had a much richer canon than 'big stars teaming up' concept I had understood it to be before having read a number of second hand back-issues from throughout the 80s/90s but never in any sort of complete order. So fantastic to see how that canon was built up.
First, thanks for the praise from everyone. Much appreciated.
@Nu-D, thanks especially for the typo correction. Funny how things like that slip through. The criticism was also indeed constructive, as you're totally right that what happened with renumbering at Heroes Reborn is not especially clear. I'll make corrections to both issues, but I think I might have to wait until the second part is released before I can do so.
Yes,great article and indeed, great start to this welcome site.
I've been reading Avengers about as long as I have the X-Men. Stern's run is definitely high on my all-time favorites list as well as Vol 3 with Busiek & Perez. The Shooter/Michelenie period is also adored with Korvacs Saga being one of the premiere cosmic epics that I think Marvel has ever done. I did drop out around the time of Acts of Vengeance so missed out on Harras' run the first time but I've been catching up and been pleasantly surprised so far. Yes mock the bomber jackets all you want but I found Harras' sub-plots to be decent and engaging, the Gathers' story arc and it's effects upon Vision and especially the love triangle between Dane Whitman, Sersi, and Crystal.
Cyke, we try very much not to be opinionated about our work, so I hope I didn't come off as mocking on the jackets. I was trying to make sure to place a mention somewhere in the narrative as it *was* a distinctive look for a period of time. Personally, I always thought it made sense. Skintight costumes are not very practical in terms of carrying things. Where did they keep their Avengers cards?
Now there is a snide comment about the "unimaginative" name of Heroes Reborn: the Return, but no one said anything when I used it in the X-Men Primer, so I figured it was safe here as well.

No, you didn't and sorry if I seemed to imply that you were mocking it. It's just that I've seen that jacket look get heavy derision elsewhere whereas I think it is an interesting look and as you point out, it's one distinctive way to mark this time in their history.
So yeah, I'm actually glad that you did acknowledge it.
