Spotlight On...DAREDEVIL, MAN WITHOUT FEAR!

Post by Monolith »

It's the end of the year... and do we have a Spotlight for you. As MightyAvengers.net has grown, we've slowly built up our catalogue of articles on Avengers characters, tackling many of their long-term members and obscure allies alike. While a Spotlight on Iron Man or Thor is still far off, today we Spotlight one of the Avengers' longest running and most consistent solo stars. The Man Without Fear is coming back to the small screen next year, so enjoy this full-length, *55 page Spotlight* on Matthew Murdock! Be sure to also check out the bonus features on his powers, his secret identity, and his law career. Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and see you in 2025!

Well done! That’s an unbelievable spotlight. Must rival Namor and Wolverine for sheer content.

I won’t lie, I’m reading this on my tablet because this is basically an annual size comic and I am so proud of you guys for this one!!!
From The Ashes Books I like: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Exceptional X-Men, X-Force, Dazzler, and NYX…so far, so good.

Thanks, guys!

Daredevil was definitely intended as a "proof of concept" Spotlight before approaching other Avengers Spotlights on the biggest names in Marvel history. I thought he would be a good test run since Daredevil rarely appears elsewhere -- just a straight 700+ issue run from 1964 to the present. One of the bigger slow downs with Spotlight writing is making a continuity map when character pop back and forth from different titles, which Daredevil did very little of. Still, this was an ongoing project from starting writing in March 2022 until February 2024 when Douglas finalized the over 500 images. An amazing job by the team and, hopefully, I may end up tackling another of the 60s solo stars sometime in the future!

Congratulations on 500 character articles culminating in such a cool character. I feel like Daredevil has probably had more top tier comic runs than any other mainstream superhero.

Monolith continues to impress with his always raising the bar in terms of his super long articles and I can't wait to read their 200+ page Spider-man spotlight when article 1000 comes around. 😆
Books to be excited for:
Immortal X-men, X-men Red, She-Hulk, The Fall of X

Thanks for sharing a little bit of what goes into these. I admire and appreciate your dedication to this craft. It kind of astounds me that Marvel isn’t trying to buy this resource from y’all. Or maybe they are?

Wow, that is insane. I can't fathom the amount of hard work putting something this massive together would be. It's like writing a book.

I'm shocked. Kudos.

After taking this intensive of a dive into Daredevil, is there a certain arc/volume/era that stands out to you as exceptional for whatever reason?

I know there are a lot of critically-acclaimed runs over the years, but I was just curious if diving into it all at once caused any new insights for you.
Best Comics of Week 16

X-titles: Exceptional X-Men #8 by Eve Ewing (1) and Carmen Carnero (1)
Non-X titles: Spectacular Spider-Men #14 by Greg Weisman (1) and Andres Genolet (1)

In parentheses number of times creator had best comic this year

I'd mostly read all of Daredevil before, but the impetus for the Spotlight is I finally found the 10 issues that bridged the Essential collections and the Frank Miller Visionaries TPBs I have. So I'd read it, but not in order.

It mostly reinforced what I've said about Daredevil for years, which is that it's a series of peaks and valleys. The good runs are really good, but there's also years at a time sorely lacking in quality. The time between Frank Miller's runs (#192-225) was pretty dry, between Last Rites and Fall From Grace (#301-318) was treading water...and there's a reason I reduced a 15 issue run to just three words in the Bio (#267-284).

Question to all... how helpful was the "Biography Page Summary" page at the beginning of the Biography?

I really like it! They're really informative summaries, letting folks bop around to whichever specific points of his history they might want to learn more about. Rolling that out with a character with this level of history must have been a huge challenge, and I really appreciate it! It makes things more accessible overall, and I hope it was a labor of love!
