When Professor X set up the X-Men in 1963 he only had five students. Now 57 years laters and I doubt even he would have believed the team now has members numbering in the hundreds. It has long been a dream project for some of the contributors to chart the comings and goings of the various members and we finally bit the bullet and gave it our best attempt. This article isn't intended to be a team entry in the classic sense as no-one is crazy enough to attempt that. Instead, this article will break down the various line-ups throughout time and detail when the particular characters joined and left. We intend on this being a long-running series of releases, adding a few more line-ups every time we update it. So, without further ado we release our first part of the X-Men Roster, detailing he line-ups from the start up to the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Stay tuned for more in the coming months...
Well I toyed with doing a team entry a number of times, but the time and effort it took me to do the X-factor Investigations one made me realise a full entry on the X-Men was too much of a big task. Even simply doing this took a while.
There is a line in the first entry that deals with Sage. Basically it mentions she was retconned into being a secret part of the team, but as she wasn't an active field member at the time I chose to omit her. In theory she would have been a member of every team from the start up to the point her double-status was revealed in the 00's. She will receive and entry later on when she officially became an active member. Amelia was never an X-Man, she was only ever an ally.
These particular entries weren't too bad as it was rather easy to note when someone joined or left the team. There are some later rosters that were a particular headache as members just left without so much of a word and I had to try and figure out when.
This article is intended on being a long-running project, with it being updated every few months with the next batch of rosters.
Everybody is entitled you their opinion...but yours is wrong.
Very cool! I love online quizzes (Sporcle has one for example) that make you list every X-Man ever. I need to study up on this so I can really become an expert.
Savage Avengers Draft: She-Hulk | Elektra | Echo | Gamora | Rogue | Chun Li | White Widow | Shuri
Very cool! When I first started collecting X-Men I used to keep a note of rosters (as I'm a geek that likes making spreadsheets :p ), but that hasbecome far too complicated in recent years!
Good job, look forward to seeing more.

I made one of those Sporcle quizzes. I used this site quite a bit but mostly Wikipedia as they have the "official" X-men roster. I'm interested to see how UXN differentiates the members as we get to more modern rosters.
Books to be excited for:
Immortal X-men, X-men Red, She-Hulk, The Fall of X
Well done James. Just a question though. On the Original team page, it says Lorna Dane chose the "now-infamous" name Polaris. Why is the name Polaris infamous?

I bet I've played it!

Cos I said it is
But seriously I was just trying to find a nice, snappy way of ending that paragraph.

Lol I thought I was missing some trivia, like Polaris is the name of hardcore extreme right group or something lol.
Well, it's a lost plotline for her. The name Polaris was first used when she and Havok were under the influence of Eric the Red. (ca. UXN #96-98)
Back in UXM #49-66, she never had a codename, and John Byrne had her then toying with codename ideas in Hidden Years, but I think she also didn't get to the point of officially choosing a name there.
IMO that was actually a wasted opportunity of Hidden Years, Byrne focused a lot on the original 5, but I would have like to see Lorna and Alex being integrated more into the team. Maybe he would have done so later on hadn't the series been canceled, but for the most part, Alex and Lorna were off to the sidelines doing their own thing. Up to the final storyline of Hidden Years, Lorna couldn't even use her magnetic abilities to fly.
