Alex and Lorna's research question

Post by nathanadler » 08 Jan 2019, 08:30

What geological and archaeological anomalies were Alex and Lorna researching in the Rio Diablo Mountains of Northern New Mexico in X-Men #97 and again in Uncanny X-Men #218 (when hunted by the Marauders and where the Brood starshark vessel crashes)?

While the Rio Diablo Mountains were an extension of the Diablo Mountain Range in California where the Dreaming Celestial was sealed during the Second Host, UXM #97 was written in 1976, 2 years before Roy Thomas introduced the Celestials into Marvel continuity.

So given Claremont didn't intend it Celestial-related, what might have been in Rio Diablo desert (Devil's River) and New Mexico that Lorna and Alex kept going back to study?

Geology, perhaps?

Geology, perhaps?
They were working together alone though, not on a dig with a university, or surveying for any company.

That still doesn't change the fact that the both of them are/were studying geology. If they were doing investigating alone, that seems the most likely realm of study.

Not all geology research is a “dig” with a big crew. A friend of mine got her masters in geology, and her field work was surveying desert formations. She spent a lot of time in the field in a team of 2-4 people, and occasionally alone. Another friend working on his geology masters initially planned to do mountaintop glacier research, which is generally done in a team of two (he ended up selling out to the mining companies instead).

CC planted a lot of plot seeds that never sprouted. It’s possible what you’re pointing to was an ungerminated seed, or it’s possible he was just putting Alex and Lorna in the real world like he was doing with other retired X-Men. But even if it was a plot seed, there’s no guarantee that he had a plan to follow through with it.

Since this is the factual part of the site the only answer is no, they bever revealled what their research project is about.

If you want to get speculative or discuss theories I'd suggest moving this to the X-pressions section.
