UXN turns 18

Post by Dean Clayton »

Today* marks uncannyxmen.net turning 18.

As the idiot that started this thing way back then, i just want to thank everyone that has contributed to the site no matter how big or small. The site wouldn't be what it is today without the commitment and dedication the team has had (past and present)

*Since 2008, We've always celebrated it on the august 14th but weirdly i've never been sure if that's actually the date it went live. I'd owned the domain for several months before while building version 1 of the site and decided to go live on the date of the first x-men movie premier in the UK but never recorded the date down anywhere (its been a long time and I was young back then!). I checked imdb and that states it should be the 15th of August :)

Happy birthday! I’ve been hanging around since 2005, and posting nearly as long.

I’ve been around since 2000- 2001 (ezboard days and what not)I believe...first website I ever religiously used to check on my 56k modem lol
From The Ashes Books I like: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Exceptional X-Men, X-Force, Dazzler, and NYX…so far, so good.

You guys got any interesting stats on users you can share? Like who is the most prolific poster? Or poster with hottest post streak lol

Funny story, we used to have our own forum (using a free version of web wiz forums) before ezboard however it was too popular and screwed the site from loading . The hosting company got mad (I’d convinced a company to give us free hosting in exchange for a banner ad) so we switched to ezboard as it was the first option we found.
Then when the site reached a point where advertising allowed us to host ourselves (some may remember the ascension gold premium thing being forced upon us which helped trigger the move ) I was able to set up web wiz forums without breaking the site, which we used until moving to unstablemolecules.com where I converted to phpbb forum software.
We manually copied some posts out of ezboard, so mainly started from scratch with webwiz but have been able to keep every post since!

So given the anniversary I was thinking that Over the next few days/week (because I’m rubbish with getting stuff done in time) I’d do a thread on some personal thoughts and comments about the history of the site and those that helped shape it if people are interested?
It won’t be in any chronological order (I’ll definitely jump around a bit) and likely I may upset someone , likely because of my bad grammar (nothing new there!) but I’ll happily answer any questions that any one has about the site as part of it (I guess an AMA)
Does that sound like something that would be of interest?

If not , I’ll just crawl back into my hole and catch up on image work for the site :)

That would be cool. One question I would probably ask are any features you considered that you had to abandon. Though, I know some of those ideas eventually came to fruition like the Avengers site.
Books to be excited for:
Immortal X-men, X-men Red, She-Hulk, The Fall of X

I started to write an issue summery once, but got bored and never finished it. I think it’s on May hard drive somewhere.

And that is the issue (no pun intended). People assume that issue summaries are a good place to start, but there are plenty of other ways to help and personally I really struggled with writing them and moved onto help with image work for articles instead.
It’s cool though, I wasn’t making a jibe at not contributing, If you ever have an idea and time (which is always the hardest thing to find!) feel free to reach out :)

Wow, i dont remember when i started posting but i do remember that when i discovered UXN, given that i didnt have internet in my house, i would copy the Spotlight On pages and paste them on Word, and read them in my house. Those were the days. Also, there were posters from Brazil and Mexico, and there was drama sometimes lol.

I remember i started a draft of a contribution about the Angel & Iceman one show, but i never finisehd it. Sorry.

CONGRATULATIONS.
