X-men #13

Post by Flapflop » 21 Oct 2020, 10:29

In a nutshell:
Spoiler: show
On Krakoa they try to heal Apocalypse with help from Hope and the Healer. He has a flashback to the past of his war with his wife Genesis and children (the horseman) against Annhillation. Annhilation seems to be a evil spirit housing in a mask that needs a host (Hickman probably playe a lot of Legend of Zelda Majoras Mask), but it consumes its wearer quickly unless he or she is powerful enough. Apocalypse and his family separate. Apocalypse is healed and goes fetching his sword from a pyramid wich houses the empty sarcophaguses of his wife and children, destroying everything when he leaves.
I have a very strong gut feeling Annhilation will turn out
Spoiler: show
to be Apocalypse wife Genesis who was lured into wearing the mask, or maybe even willingly put it on in an act of if you cant beat them join them

Betrayal count:
Spoiler: show
more of an historical betrayal I guess, but perhaps Apocalypse being betrayed by his former horsemen?
This was... okay. It felt a little out of place to me as a mostly
Flashback issue. Not the worst of this crossover (I’m looking at you, Cable #5), but it’s not great either

So, this is an interesting retcon, or perhaps more of a clarification of Apocalypse's fixation with testing other to guarantee the survival of the fittest, it was all in preparation of this war.

Also, who was that three female looking creature at the end? Was that Arakko, and have we seen it/her as a humanoid before? and have we ever seen Krakoa like that?

I also think that is Arrako, strange I always thought that Krakoa was female and Arrako male.

Great work by Asrar the art was fantastic, fantastically colored by Sunny Gho and paired with Silva on Excalibur made this week readings such a pleasure to read!

The panel where Genesis and the Horsemen are about to enter the breach, you can see the female High Summoner standing on Arrako's arm, who is now in full humanoid form.

I think the next chapter "Statis" will just do that. The other books seem to focus on the 10 Krakoan wielders.

Dont worry BC, I just realized how badly worded my message was haha, i meant we've only seen something similar in Krakoa and Doug's fusion in Hox/Pox, but never before we have seen Krakoa walk like a man, that i remember, but Arakko does.

You might want to check Giant Sized X-men #1 from 1975 (the first appearance of Krakoa) ;)
The classic tagline for Krakoa is "the island that walks like a man".

That's why that phrase was so familiar.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to mesh with the story the Summoner provided before - if we're supposed to be picking up stuff where the details aren't the same, or if it is the same and I'm just not reading it right.

It is interesting to finally have a 'reason' for Apocalypse's survival of the fittest desires. (EDIT: I read elsewhere he already had a reason for this - ensuring humanity/mutants would be strong enough if the Celestials came to judge them - so I suppose it's another retcon.)

Just read this and thought....

Wasn't Apocalypse supposed to be judging mutants/humans for the celestials so they don't wipe them all out? and also planning a future war between powerful Mutant leaders himself/Sinister and co? I recall this storyline when Genocide wanted the Celestial armour to take his place but he needed to contact the Celestials to show he was worthy of the armour as the new Apocalypse? In the end think Apocalypse's plan was to betray them anyway so it may fit in very well actually

Female summoner believe is meant to be war?

I did spot something interesting enough it mentions that the helmet of Amenth contains an Elder God? could this relate to Magik as she killed them all?

As usual, this month's X-MEN didn't disappoint. I am here for all the world-building and really appreciate this take on Apocalypse's motivation. If Genesis doesn't turn out to be Annihilation I'll be shocked. To see Apocalypse be told "you're not strong enough" and for him to accept it as fact shook me.

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, and I know we'll know the answer soon, but...who is the 10th swordbearer from Krakoa? We've seen them depicted but in the one image I can find, 5 of them are in shadows. We've got:

Wolverine w/ Muramasa
Magik w/ Soulsword
Cypher w/ Warlock
Storm w/ Skybreaker
Captain Avalon w/ Sword of Might
Captain Britain w/ Starlight Sword
Apocalypse w/ Scarab
Cable w/ Light of Galador

It looks like Gorgon has both Grasscutter and Godkiller, and I think I see Magneto portrayed as the 10th person with an additional (11th?) sword? What's going on here?

Both could be true...so not a retcon but an addition? Makes the mission have more personal stakes to them (although thr Celestial explanation was a retcon added by Milligan, I totally believe).

The “Female Summoner” isn’t war, they have a War.

Magik had Legion kill the Elder Gods connected to Limbo, Elder Gods is a catch-all term for extradimensional beings (or gods) that existed before the current crop of gods. That includes Chnton, Set, and now Knull.

Thanks BC didn't really know much about the Elder God's.

Wonder if assuming the X-Men win will the horsemen adn Arrokan mutants be resurrected?

Think will leave all this till the Novel comes out unsure if I will enjoy reading it or not.

Apocalypse's Scarab sword being "infused with external sadness" is hilarious.
