X-Force #10

Post by das_boot » 08 Jul 2020, 12:24

Spoiler: show
Domino, QQ and Logan are back in the temple from last issue, and are quickly separated. Black Tom eats some Krakoan plants and goes to Terra Verde. Domino fights her way to the heart of the temple to see Logan about to be sacrificed and Quentin’s been made into some kind of seed pod. Jean confronts Beast about the nature of secrets and how they SHOULD be honest with one another. Jean and Sage meet up with Tom (who can’t control the plants) and they combine powers to beat the plants. I think Quentin died again. Jean quits X-Force, meets up with Logan in a hot tub where he tries to convince her that she’s needed on the team, and they kiss. Jeannie in a bikini indeed.
I kind of feel like I’d have liked this more had I not waited 84 years for it. It wasn’t really great, I guess.

I enjoyed it BUT the wait did water it down some. Which isn’t fair to the creative team. Stupid Covid!

I really liked Jean getting all up in Beast’s s***.

Oh absolutely, but I hate that this is the second instance since this relaunch that Jean’s shown some personality.

Please, Das! Give the lady a break. She has so little to spare.

Kidding.

This was OK. I too felt that it was watered down, but imagine I'll feel differently if I read these stories collected together. I really enjoyed the pseudo-scientific body-horror element of this all, and thought the art work was pretty beautiful

This title still isn't grabbing me at all. I'm also firmly in the "I hate Hank McCoy" club.

The only thing that bothers me is how Sage is being portrayed. She had that terrbiel goofy factor on her. I mean that jungle explorer outfit was to much for me, when I think that she is supposed to be an infiltrator and knows her surroundings

Maybe Percy coudlnt get Iceman...

Actually, the revelation at the end is pretty funny. Just like Amazon is doing recommendations.

This. I’m starting the movement, officially:

SAGE SHOULD BE TO THE X-MEN WHAT ORACLE IS TO THE BAT FAMILY

Also @Insipid— are you still collecting cheques for Marvel basing Emma Frost’s character on you in a “cutting” mood?

This continues to be the most consistent X-Book for me. The voices are a bit off. Sage showing up in camo like a novice was just bizarre and Jean lacks the usual warmth that I associate with the character. Did like that end scene though.

I liked seeing Jean with a harder edge. She doesn't need to be team mom all the time. Especially with this crew.

I don't mind the edge, I just don't feel a semblance of Jean underneath it. I think Tom Taylor did a perfect job balancing both in Red but here I feel like I'm only seeing the edge.

I agree that Jean was a bit off here, but not out of character exactly. In those rare moments when she’s written as a character and not a concept meant to embody everything we admire, she can be firm with other people—sometimes outright mean. It was less what she did and how she conducted herself and more the way that she spoke for me. It just didn’t seem like Jean’s voice exactly, but I realize that not everyone would feel this way and that sometimes we project our ideas of how characters should be on to them.

The one thing that struck me as weird—but not out of character—was Jean outright saying that “the lies were for humans and not us”. This isn’t the first time Jean has been a part of a scheme to deceive humankind, but it felt a little weird to me to see her say it in such clear terms. Jean has never seemed to me like a person who could be so direct about moral expediency under normal circumstances. She seems like a person who would be more invested in framing these things more palatably for herself, but idk.

I totally agree with Insipid. This feels like Jean’s angry about a lot of things, and actually, perhaps we’re supposed to be interpreting this version of Jean as someone who is overall happy with the status quo of Krakoa, and the way of life that they’re building, but because she’s not only aware of, but also party to, the darker side of protecting Krakoa? I feel like she’s having a harder time than she’d like to admit in reconciling her notion of a peaceful environment to exist in (her goal in Red), with the actions that being a part of X-Force would have her commit to, if that makes sense?

I also agree that between Hellions and X-Force, Sage is being written as more spacey than I’m used to...

I enjoyed this issue, but certainly the time delay affected by ability to connect with the story and really care about what was going on. I found the flora aspects of this fun and for what is probably going to be a somewhat stand alone story arc in terms of villainy, the antagonists worked for me. I too, loved the horror aspects, especially as it related to QQ.

I have some problems with dialogue here. The opening dispute between having memories - trauma to be specific - erased versus living with it is an interesting topic to explore and I kind of like that it is through Domino, a character who we know as tough and a survivor is the one exploring this. Meanwhile Wolverine makes a point as it relates to his experience. But then, we get a blurred out explicative that just takes away from my enjoy meant. Be more clever writers.

The panels are gorgeous and when Jean makes her entrance I was fixated. I went back to stare at the two panels again and again. But, I don't like her portrayal here. Since the development of Krakoa, she's been weakened down in power. Her moral position here - while I agree with her - doesn't make a ton of sense. Certainly the situation has changed and things are different, but this girl has been keeping Xavier's secrets for a lifetime. She knew he wasn't dead and it's alluded she knew Danger was an intelligent entity forced into servitude. Jean knew. She understood. And that's how she needs to be written. Passionate with a hint of wild just below her collected exterior. Slightly arrogant supported by her power and skill. Transcendent in the sense that she is Xavier's heir and sees the bigger picture far more than any other student of X.

This wasn't it. I didn't really buy that she'd just attack Beast. Beast's moral high ground for reading his mind was laughable. It felt like an easy way to write in conflict. But sometimes the subtext of a conversation is just as exciting as a fight, if not more so. I would have liked to see the same hottub scene end with Wolverine telling Jean she's too good for X-Force and that she can't deal with the dirty work to have her reveal she already knew, she helped formulate the response and leave it with Wolverine's shock about just how capable Jean is. Alas, we may get school marm Jean in a green mini for the foreseeable future.
