Wolverine & Captain America: Weapon Plus #1 (SPOILERS)

Post by Monolith » 11 Jul 2019, 19:06

Hey, kid -- you like continuity? We got continuity. We got continuity coming out of our eyeholes.

This book seems dedicated to filling in all the gaps in the Weapon Plus Program previously known. E.V.A. recruits Wolverine and Captain America to investigate Weapon Plus, fulfilling Fantomex's final mission using pre-recorded videos of Fantomex before he died. In their search, they uncover a near complete breakdown of the Weapon Plus Programs, tying together various Super-Soldier experiments from Marvel history.

Weapon I - Project Rebirth - Captain America
Weapon II - Brute Force, the environmentally friendly team of super-animals from the 90's
Weapon III - Skinless Man
Weapon IV - Project: Sulfur - Man-Thing
Weapon V - Project Venom - the Vietnam-era symbiote experiments from the recent Venom series
Weapon VI - Project Power - Luke Cage
Weapon VII - Project Homegrown - Nuke
Weapon VIII - ??????????????
Weapon IX - Project Psyche - apparently Typhoid Mary?
Weapon X - Wolverine
Weapon XI - ??????????????
Weapon XII - Huntsman
Weapon XIII - Fantomex
Weapon XIV - Stepford Cuckoos
Weapon XV - Ultimaton
Weapon XVI - All-God
Weapon XXX - ??????????????

Liked it very much, but what’s up with Neve‘s art? For me that was half the quality he usually delivers. Not to compare with his Shield art.

Wait when did Fantomex die? Was he one of the casualties of Legion and X-Man?

Fantomex gave up his body for Professor Xavier to be reborn in Astonishing X-Men (4th series) #6-7. His mind is "alive" on the astral plane still, but his body was re-engineered into 'X'.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

This series should be interesting, I wonder how much the past Weapon Plus projects will feature.

You know what I like most? Is that the story perfectly encapsulates what a shared universe is so amazing.

All those pieces could be separate but connecting them in this way enriches it. And honestly, it’s shocking that no one thought to connect them before. This is totally something that would make sense in the MCU
Morrison Era 2001-2005, Decimation Era from 2005-2012, Bendis Era 2012-2016, M-Pox era 2016-2017, and Resurrxion 2017-2019, Hickman Era 2019-?

Is this a one-shot or mini?

I thought the Weapon X project took place in the sixties and despite Marvel's sliding timescale that time was fixed due the age suppression given to those involved, how can the project that empowered Luke Cage have been before that.

Fantomax says that the programs ran concurrently (pretty sure he did)...so it’s 100% possible that Luke Cage’s program started early and ran into and through the time of Weapon X.

Plus, Monolith would have to clarify (he did write Logan’s spotlight) if the Weapon x has to happen in the 60s
Morrison Era 2001-2005, Decimation Era from 2005-2012, Bendis Era 2012-2016, M-Pox era 2016-2017, and Resurrxion 2017-2019, Hickman Era 2019-?

Team X took place in the 60's.

Weapon X (i.e. Logan going into the Adamantium tank) occurred "X number of years ago", but ROUGHLY around the time of the Fantastic Four's space flight and public debut.

I did my best to lay out the timeline here: https://uncannyxmen.net/character-relat ... -x-program

You're right that Luke Cage still would've been created after that. Like BC said, though, different programs ran concurrently. It's possible a later program could have successfully reached the experimental trial phase before an earlier one.

I thought it was a series of one-shots...kinda like that Defenders one-shot from last year?

Yeah totally agree with this and also how Sacks still leaves some holes so others can play with them later. This was a fun issue to see the history play out and various corners of the MU hinted at.

Even if Weapon XXX is really unfortunately named.

One interesting tidbit left out is the Sentry was also created by a project attempting to recreate the Super-Soldier. Could easily slot into Weapon VIII or XI.

He’s an offshoot of Weapon X, which separated into it’s own thing. Like if Google had created Youtube and then Youtube became it’s own separate company
