Astonishing X-Men Annual 001 (2018)

Post by InsipidLust » 15 Aug 2018, 19:18

This was a dark, cerebral issue that was both painful to read and also wonderful. It's an O5 story with a return of a classic villain, updated to suit the tone the X-Men series took in later years. Great art and an interesting take on all of the characters—and on Charles Xavier's vision of his own dream, as well as his missteps over the years. Definitely, I recommend. Will post spoilers if requested.

I liked this most of all because I think that X-Men comics should make you think and feel, and wrestle with things that make you uncomfortable in some way. This did a great job of that.

I liked this. It didn't have a lot of superheroics in but it was more about the newly resurrected Xavier touching base with his former students. Xavier is certainly different from before, a lot darker. His use of mindwipes reminds me of his fondness for it during the 60's.

X really is a right bastard, ain't he? He really works as an asshole Xavier without feeling out-of-character (since he is sorta a different character).

I agree that this was a really strong read.

Well i mean is X really Xavier? I guess you could really ask the same about Jean after absorbing the memories of the PF and Maddy (nobody really never touched on that point either)...

Eitther way he felt more like 1960s Xavier than Claremont’s Xavier

This Xavier was dead and tortured for "thousands of years" of relative time. If anything, he's about as pragmatic as the OG Xavier.

"Alien invasion coming? Cool, I'll just have someone else play me for my students, and when he dies, let them believe I'm dead for awhile."
"Parents unsure if you should stay at my school? Easy fix -- I'll make them forget you exist so they stop bothering us."
"I'm not sure you're ready to lead the team on your own. Let me just pretend to be kidnapped and see how you handle it."

I... yeah. This was dark, but beautiful.

Marvel, however, i’m suing you for stealing my personality for Iceman.

I'd love X to gather a team of X-Men together and go off the grid, basically being the slightly less lethal X-Force from a few years back. X, Emma Frost, Forge, Monet, Magik and Archangel. A team that knows hard decisions need to be made but will try and save people before it coming to killing.

I don't think Xavier fits the main X-Men team anymore, and he hasn't for a while. It became very apparent during Cyclops's tenure on Utopia. Ideally I would have preferred Xavier to stay dead, but that never happens anymore, so at least try and find a new role for him rather than lean on old tropes.

I mean Xavier is dead (not like he hasn’t “died” and come back before cynicism set in either lol). For all intents and purposes X very much feels like X-Man to Cable.

Dark, sad but beautiful issue indeed.
Spoiler: show
Its Xaviers final (life) lesson to his students that fails and he is dissapointed. But then he mindwipes en -rewrites them anyway to let them be happy, because they cant be happy out from themselves
So it's you and me together against the world, huh?

They were definitely mind-wiped again. They went back to the same restaurant that they initially went to and Beast doesn't recall being there again but the staff their recognise him.

It's possible he flipped a few switches to make them a bit better adjusted. He just did that to the whole Astonishing team a few issues ago.

I could see mind-wiping/altering Hank, Bobby, and Warren to be happier (or more accepting). But Jean? I'm not so sure. Even if such a treatment worked with her, it seems like it may fade or crack over time given her prowess.

A very strong story, an unhappy school reunion that faces hard moral choices and an old villain that I never knew existed till now. Rosenburg continues to impress.

That whole bit with the initial table meet— the four of them realising they weren’t happy and hadn’t been for a while, all due to their status as X-Men...

Wow. DARK.

On first read I didn't get the impression that X actually adjusted their emotions, just that he removed their memories of the day. But re-reading Jean's dialogue on the last page makes me think that X might've done so... or, maybe when he removed the memories, at least let the impact of the day's events stay with them (and they saw that X had a point that while they personally have suffered, it's been for the greater good?) And like EphX I think maybe Warren wasn't mind-wiped... just based off the last panel, but also because X says "Warren understood" and Warren doesn't actually say anything that implies he doesn't remember what happened.

I also just wanted to point out that I love Warren's thousand-mile-stare when he executes Lucifer. Great art there.

Dark and very modern...Guggenheim tries so hard to recapture the essence of Claremont but this story is much more in the vein of Morrison or even Gillen (re-read his stuff and see how even though his stories relished in superheroics they were pretty dark and modern too) and I love that streak here. I don’t think that’s necessary for all X-books but for any title called Astonishing should strive to achieve such things.

I really liked this one. The ending with Warren being kinda scary but pragmatic was very good. Iceman was actually funny, which a lot of writers can't seem to get right with him. I'm loving the "new" Jean since she's been back, too.

Apparently, the mutant-hating town of Lago, New York, was actually used in books before. It was the location of a plotline in Alias, where JJ investigates the death of a girl who was suspected of being a mutant -- not the same one Beast mentions, though. The town seemed to have a history of that sort of thing, as well.

I love continuity like this.

I just got around to reading this and I loved it. Very dark and IMO on point with characterizations. I really enjoyed Bobby this issue.

I'm leaning towards the Warren wasn't wiped crowd.

I'm excited that this writer is on the team of new writers for Uncanny.
Queer comedian who is just getting back into comic books after almost a decade. I got a lot of catching up to and I'm excited to be back on the boards.
