eXtermination #1

Post by Flapflop » 15 Aug 2018, 09:03

   Read at your own risk
Spoiler: show
In the future a cloaked character ponders amid the rubbles and death of the Xavier institute that “that old bastard” screwed it all and he has to clean up his mess. Now two young French mutants (twin brother and sister) are saved from a mob by the 05 plus Bloodstorm an brought to the Xavier institute. They are amnesiac and don’t know how they come here. Cyclops is on a date with Bloodstorm and ponders their future/past. Then they are attacked by Ahab and his hounds and AHAB KILLS BLOODSTORM (spiked with a silver spear, because in his future there are more mutant vampires). A grieve stricken, set on revenge Scott seeks contact with the others. Bobby leaves the Hamilton show and is attacked by the stranger from the future. He is first saved by Cable but then electrified. At the Xavier institute Scott confronts Rachel about Ahab (she was a Hound) and Rachel wonders why Ahab is here. Cable fights the stranger and seems to get the upper hand. Young Jean uses Cerebro to seek Bobby. Saying he outlived his usefulness and is relieved of his duty THE STRANGER OUTWITS CABLE AND SHOOTS HIM POINT BLANK. A psychic backlash of Cables death hurts young Jean. The stranger takes young Bobby and bodyslides for two. Kitty, Rachel and the rest of the 05 find Cables body and Adult Jean and Nightcrawler bampf in. Rachel is scanning and is sure it wasn’t Ahab who killed Cable. In a undisclosed location Young Bobby is put in a stasis tube, four more empty next to him. The strangers says: One down, Four more to go and it is revealed it’s none other than YOUNG CABLE A.K.A. NATHAN SUMMERS (im guessing in his twenties, or is it Stryfe I wonder)
This is maybe the best and most shocking i read in a long time

He's the child of Scott Summers, he was always going to be hot.

Ed Brison will also write Uncanny, if the rest of this series and Uncanny keep this level of greatness (next to Astonishing being amazing now) the X-men could be back at great heights for good

Being Rosenberg (Astonishing) and Thompson (Mr. and Ms. X) both are good titles as well now

With a code name like “Bloodstorm” you better have a power that makes people’s blood rain down from the sky.

Edit: I guess it’s an alt-u vampire Ororo? Well, at least it makes sense, but ugh to the character and the name.

HO. LEE. SHIT.

Although I can see Hopeless on one of the preview covers so there’s at least one issue that i’ll hate.

My only complaint is that for some reason Real Jean seemed a bit... off?

She wasn’t as emotional as Rachel over Cable’s death but I thought that pointed to her maturity and composure.

Bloodstorm is an awesome name and character so there’s that...at least the Mutantbx version was lol

I came into this fully ready to be indifferent and it exceeded my expectations by far. That panel where adult Jean first shows up is a masterwork of line and color. This had a tension that I've felt many of the X-Books have lacked for years and I appreciated it. Haven't really felt pulled into an event quite like this in a while, and it helps that the concept itself isn't fully asinine.

Yeah, I'm so used to capital-E Events being underwhelming that I came into this with low expectations (beyond finally wrapping up the O5 arc) but this was good on its own merits. I was sad and surprised Bloodstorm got offed (especially after she had more dialogue on that one page than I think she's had in the entirety of her other appearances), and also shocked Cable got offed (though of course that one won't stick... right? Wait, is that why Cable's not on the X-Men Disassembled group pic? Uh oh). Talk about big stakes early on. One could make the argument that they're just shock deaths to ramp up interest, but, I think it actually worked well here. Funny how based off other stuff (like the last issue of Blue) I expected O5 Bobby to be the one to die, but instead he just gets kidnapped and we get a dead Bloodstorm and Cable instead.

It's also probably necessary to help make Kid Cable properly villainous since I think we're all (well, most of us) ready for the O5 to go bye-bye... so right away that's points in his favor. I like to interpret him as being mad that Adult Cable failed in his role as self-appointed Time Cop and let Beast's mucking with the O5 go through. Interestingly it seems like Cable was okay with it for the opposite reason Beast did it (instead of showing the adults how they fell and do better, it's to show the kids how much they screw up and prevent it?)

Kid Cable seems to be lacking the T-O arm, so... is he really more of a Nate Grey?

I totally thought it was going to be Hope until the last page.

Easiest answer is that he's another alt-U Cable who came into the past at a much younger place in his life. He may even be the child of the Scott and Jean that stayed in the present, which changed his trajectory in life.

Similarly to Kang, Cable had transversed the timestream so many times you can’t be sure what one Cable does or doesn’t know

This was really exciting but then again, so was the first issue of Battle of the Atom so I'm trying to hold my excitement back a bit.

That two page spread was the most I ever got invested in Bloodstorm and then she died a few pages later. I wonder what Bunn was thinking with her, I can't remember the last time a character was introduced and then did so little.

One of two things happened:

1. Bunn recruited Jimmy Husdon and Bloodstorm and had long-term plans that got sidelined by eXtermination.

2. Bunn planned on Bloodstorm having a much shorter stint and she was kept around to increase the body-count during eXtermination.

Battle of the Atom was literally Valium in comic form.

I think this one, he had plans but Marvel editors wanted eXtermination so they had to go

Makes sense, alse explains a lot of times Cable 'died' in the past but was 'alive' again. Their are multiple Cables from diffrent moments in the past and future who time travel
