Astonishing Iceman #2

That was actually a cool way to beat Helium.

Is this Mr. Clean someone we’ve met before?
So on one hand we have the existence of a being who can reset the entire timeline, destroying everything…, and on the other hand we have a few mind wipes and some gaslighting. You're right, totally evenly weighted.

Mr. Clean from Joe Casey's run (UXM #135-138), maybe? The blonde hair and "smells like chemicals" seems like they fit...

Yeah I looked it up and you’re right. Damn, last time he was mentioned was House of X…sheesh, deep cut

I really don’t understand Steve Orlando.

He can competently write Scarlet Witch, arguably one of the most complex characters in Marvel history…

Then took Marauders from a fun, yet directionless in the last few arcs title to… whatever Marauders Volume 2 aspired to be…

And now… this.

Sigh. Well. We knew that not every Fall of X title could be a winner I guess?

My problem is two-fold:
1) The flashback felt alil flat…idk why but just alil flat.
2) Iceman almost doesn’t feel like a character. Like I’m more interested in seeing his boo Romeo and dig into his emotiona being the anchor for someone like this. Like the toll on him, the paranoia questioning if Bobby really loves him or is being manipulated subconsciously, etc…

I have one problem:

I really think that it’s hard to care about anything in this title.

That's my general opinion on Iceman entirely.

Lmao…that’s fair enough.
There are things I like…Iceman’s fun use of his powers and the villains used. But outside that, you’re right, there’s little for me to hang on to. And the story lacks the gloom, for me, of the other FoX titles, which give them an urgency I love.

Yeah, there’s something that almost feels very laidback and slow compared to the other FoX titles. I kind of feel like this event really relies on urgency and desperation, and we’re getting none of that from the title character, it’s all from Romeo who… we’re meant to care about? I guess?

I wonder if that's a bigger clue that this isn't Bobby as we know it. It's an emotional attachment facsimile of Bobby. So Romeo is creating him as the fun loving guy he loves, but Bobby is still quite dead.

I'm disappointed Mr Clean isn't bald. Too much risk of infringement?

This title REALLLLLY relies on you caring about Romeo and his relationship to Bobby, which....almost nobody does. I mean, half of each of these issues are about him. Which is fine, if he was anything more than Bobby's Inhuman Boyfriend. I really just don't think every hero is a solo title hero, and Bobby has never been one for me. I'm bored.

I mean, I enjoyed the last Iceman solo titles just… yeah. This isn’t even really an Iceman title, it’s “Iceman’s boyfriend (with upward inflection to denote question mark) and his ice golem (see previous upward inflection)”

I know you enjoyed them - I did not. I personally was not a fan of Sina Grace's run, though I enjoyed when Emma showed up. I just think Bobby isn't very deep and THAT'S OK. We need shallow gay rep too!
