Hellfire Gala designs

Found some news out about the X-Men, Avengers, Batman or even? The monthly previews have been released ? Or perhaps there's a rumour you've heard, then post it here for the world to see.

I hope they have a follow up issue where Milkshake guests stars as a Joan Rivers-esque talk show host who just spends 22 pages ripping outfits apart.

I agree that there is definitely a lot 'attempts' and the issue is some of them just feel like they're 'trying to do fashion' without trying to understand the character. Bobby is the perfect example. It's like "He's gay, so obviously he'll want to emulate drag culture, right?"...No, that just isn't Bobby. He wishes.
I would happily do this

OK but a lot of these other looks are amazing! Sunfire, Colossus, Laura, Synch, Mercury, Jubilee, Rictor, Cannonball, Karma, Prodigy, and Eye Boy are my favorites. Daken is simple but classy. Northstar and Kyle are good, just not amazing. Same with Aurora. SUPER disappointed by Dazzler. Thought she'd have something really out there and colorful, not just a disco suit with light effects. Also not a big fan of Warpath or Madrox. Wiz Kid and Mirage look great. Dani looks really elegant there. And Mastermind is attending the gala? WHY?

I am
Living for Eye Boy and Prodigy right now...also can we just give some love to Rictor for making that hood so dope!

I’ll defend Gambit though...for a guy who wore pink for so long, I respect the subtlety he’s going for now.

Next batch:

The hottest batch of designs yet? Damn.
I don't understand how these can be so good whilst so many of the others are so wrong / ridiculous.

Five perfectly good designs, Colossus's fur trimmed cloak and Synch's jacket are both brilliant and love the Wolverine slashes in Laura's top.

I don't get how these get it so right when so many others we've seen are not just awful but utterly ridiculous. Pyslocke's is nice too.

This really is one of the biggest mixed bag ever in terms of line wide costume designs.
To be fair, Spectral, Lucas Wernock did these designs and he's a super talented artist and designer. Like, I can't even begin to understand how he does such an amazing job. I follow him on every platform and his art and fashion is top notch. A lot of the other costumes were designed by people who are comic artists, which he isn't necessarily, and thus they may not have as much experience as him or Dauterman in couture or fashion. That said, it's criminal they didn't get Jen Bartel or Kris Anka to do any of these.

@BC, Prodigy and Synch probably have my favorite looks for the men. They just fit the characters and the theme really well. I'm trying to figure out if I like Gambit's.

So many shirtless men it kills me. Also, in regards to the suits for security - I have no problem with that. But Sage is wearing a dress, so...and still no reason for the ugliness of the suits (look at Beast for example) and the stupid bolo ties, which Wolverine would 100% wear but Quire would never be caught dead in except ironically. They just don't look good. And also I think it's a stupid concept that X-Force is "security" when the entire event is literally super powered beings. You're telling me Domino, a notorious show off, doesn't want to put on a big fancy outfit? Quire, the most obnoxiously self-absorbed X-Character, who has a pink mohawk specifically because he sees himself as a rebel, wants to come in an ill fitting black suit? Yeah, I just think it's a dumb concept.

I know I’m heterosexual but...why wouldn’t most of these men not be wearing shirts?

I mean...it's a tad douchey, no? You go to a party, and some dude is walking around without a shirt I'm gonna think "dbag".

For some it fits, because they're a little douchey or because they're showing off their power/mutation, or in Gambit's case, they're a sexy and they know it but for, say, Bishop, I just don't see him picking an outfit and thinking "No! Just the jacket! I wanna show off my abs and pecs"

It's like with Bobby. The outfit/art isn't necessarily fitting the character.

Still there are many more hits than misses! I loooove everyone on that X-Men cover and think Jamie should keep that outfit as his new Multiple Man costume

I mean I suppose you could say the same about them wearing skin tight leotards thag show every single muscle but...here we are and never really think all the X-Men men are dbags because they’re essentially showing off their abs.

And who is shirtless? We have Colossus in a sheer shirt. I guess it’s less douchey since he has sleeves? Or I’d say it’s fashion.

Then you got Bishop and Pyro, both going for looks. Pyro’s outfit is inspired by flames (the fringe and the color) with hold accents giving it a bit of class. While Bishop’s shirtlessness is like the least offensive part of his outfit. I mean he’s the Red Bishop right? Guy has to have flare but the outfit falls short, except thr shoes and the facial hair. I guess because he is an energy absorber with some physical abilities, muscles should be “in”.

Banshee’s outfit is inspired by some looks from last year’s runways (the tie with no undershirt but an oversized jacket). But it fits...the shoes don’t excite me BUT he is a tad bit of an older guy with maybe some more conservative fashion sensibilities so it works.

Mercury is shirtless I suppose, and so is Mystique I bet but metamorphs are gonna metamorph.

Sunspot is shirtless too but he’s also one of the few people rocking an outfit that fully invokes his powerset and while not my favorite, it fits the idea of “mutant avant garde” plus he’s hanging in shi’ar space so it works.

And then you have Gambit, who is really wearing something I’ve seen men wear before at some events pre-Covid. I don’t think anybody thought those brothas were d-bags but maybe that’s just a cultural difference. He has one of my faves just because it’s so normal.

Eyeboy, Prodigy and Iceman are shirtless but I guess they get passes because 2 out of the 3 are glorious. Prodigy is really just amazing. Iceman, I see what they tried but honestly more than his personality, his iceform takes away anything glamorous the look may have had. It’s a no for me Boss.
As for guys wearing shirts:

Rictor is killing it...the whole thing fits his new motif and his powers and I love a hood.

Monarch is underrated...it feels very couture and avant garde plus it feels regal. Yet it does border on the costume-y but given his predilections and his position it fits.

Daken is okay...like I’m cool he went alittle “normal” but the no shoes is bothering me.

Kyle and Northstar are also a No for me.

Madrox looks like a really bad Silver Age costume. But, I know it’s controversial but damn Mastermind looks pretty good. It has components of his OG look but made into something more dignified. Also, best hair he’s ever had...

Wiz Kid’s isn’t bad but I wonder if the space helmet is just for space or like a statement about his job...

Mags is okay. He looks like a statesmen. And given his age (like his reference for childhood style would be the ‘30s), it fits. I just think I need to see it from a different artist.

Warpath is 100% a no for me dog. Also a No for Nightcrawler too...just too much of the “see swashbuckler” without being adventurous.

The X-Force security gear bothers me wayyyyy less than everyone else besides Token I think. It’s not fun but functional and I would actually love it, it it’s explained that Logan picked out the ties lol...

I like Shaw’s look...it screams villain lol

With Havok I agree with Milkshakes, not a fan...
Exodus and Sinister? Perfect...honestly my favorite male designs up with Gambit’s...but my #1 is Synch’s. The flyest...it fits that guy I imagine him to be and looks like something that Pyer Moss or Heron preston or Virgil might give to a brotha.

Sunfire’s is a cool because it feels true to him and looks good.

Colossus and Cannonball come correct as well. Synch is the flyest but Colossus is hands down the sexiest man...periodt!

I’ve been trying since last night to figure out why Selene’s outfit looked so familiar to me in a very specific way and it occurred to me this morning that it looks like Janet Jackson’s late 90s leather look from “What’s it Gonna Be”, the designer of which I can’t quite remember. It also reminiscent of a specific Madonna look I think but I can’t remember.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/553872454168050096/

I swear there is something even more specific that the look is referencing but I can’t quite place my finger on it. I swear I know this getup from somewhere though,
Unity Squad Draft: Monet St. Croix. Mr. Fantastic. Professor Xavier. Doctor Voodoo. Tempus.

Mostly look good, there are a couple that I find a bit weird (Nightcrawler for example) but the only ones I actually dislike are are Prestige, Iceman, Prodigy, Warpath, Khora, Sunspot and maybe Wiz-Kid (the fish bowl and paleface/lipstick look to be more precise, his suit is passable)

I think someone said that Jean should take this outfit as her new costume, I agree, though for purely practical reasons I'd loose the long hanging bit at the back (clearly I don't know what that would be called, a train maybe or is that just for wedding dresses?)

Shocked to be complaining about a LACK of Wolverine, but it's beyond lame that he doesn't have a real look. A huge missed opportunity for something iconic.

My LCS had a free Hellfire Gala preview booklet out. I picked one up, haven't had a chance to read the prose parts yet, but picture wise, it had all the ones in this thread and nothing new that I saw (except a couple extra views of Colossus, like without the jacket).

EDIT: except for Manifold. Was that posted here?

Agreed. I've had quite a few conversations with jerks on reddit who come into the X-Men sub and complain about queerness, and my first response is "You picked the wrong sub to be a homophobe in".

Xavier: How do we show the world who we really are as a people?
Emma: By turning looks and stunting pretty.

You all know I’ve never been fully comfortable with or about with the “mutants are a direct allegory for racial minorities” thing that some people and publications try to drive home (especially the incredibly misguided “Magneto is Malcolm X and Xavier is Dr. King” thing).

I do think it’s reasonable to see mutancy as an allegory for just feeling like an outsider. I mean everyone can relate to that at some people or another and it fits, especially since being a mutant usually happens during adolescence when everybody gets ostracized at one point or another.

But if there was anything ever to be a real direct allegory for being a mutant it is being queer in a heteronormative and patriarchal world. Even before Krakoa or the 90s, those old Golden Age stories about the X-Men are just a 60s interpretation of mainstream queerness that Lee and company didn’t realize they were writing about.

Now with Krakoa and everything else that preceded it, I’m gobsmacked that anyone would not be able to see the parallels. Like you would really have to be purposely misinterpreting everything about the X-Men to NOT see it. Or just have so much heterosexual privilege that you’re blind to it lol
