Diamond Halts Comic Distribution

Found some news out about the X-Men, Avengers, Batman or even? The monthly previews have been released ? Or perhaps there's a rumour you've heard, then post it here for the world to see.

Diamond Halts Comic Distribution

So no more comics for awhile, at least hard copies. My local comic store had been doing curbside pickup the last couple weeks (doing the orders over the phone) but they'll likely need to shutter now. I bet a lot of comic stores are going to go under.

Not sure how many people now get their comics digitally rather than hard copies; haven't seen anything about whether digital sales will pause or not.

Both DC and Marvel have been quiet so far about whether they plan to still release digitally (Marvel originally said Doctor Aphra #1, slated for next week, would release but then walked back on that).

There's been speculation that if the companies are ever going to dump print and go all-digital, now would make more sense than ever. That'd really shift some things in the industry though. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a ton of collectors who would refuse to make the switch. I might be one to be honest. I don't really like reading things digitally and half the fun is going to the store, seeing everything on the shelves, chatting about stuff with people in person, etc.

Exactly hopefully they will still do Graphic novels love themas the story looks more complete. The Digital age has its dark side and I fear it wil cause a great deal of both good and bad things for comic publishers.

This is stupid and going to alienate even more of it's ever smaller fanbase just to appease Diamond. Specially considering how short is people's attention span these days, and that now it's a time everyone is at home demanding new content.

Well it is April Fools Day...

Weird decision as 90% of the workload can be done from home anyway or even digitally?

I have downloaded a few graphic novels from Amazon most recently the Wedding/Honeymoon of Cyclops & Jean Grey old school but it looks really good.

Always have this fear comic book shops will slowly fade away....

It's 100% because they don't want to be the reason comic shops die off. If people switch to digital because it's the only way they can read comics then there's a solid portion of them that won't switch back for a variety of reasons.

I kind'a think that, while disappointing, this is really good of Marvel to protect comic book shops which were a dying breed as it were. I have the utmost respect to them for this.

I strongly doubt Marvel's motives are really that altruistic. Seems more like a case of not wanting to alienate Diamond. But not having comics for 2-3 months will hurt them a lot more.

I dont think you know how impactful good publicity is...especially in the era of social media. Where angry fans get TV shows cancelled and happy fans get things resurrected.

By doing what they’re doing, Marvel (DC and all the other companies) will eat 2-3 months of no comic sales but will come out with good will being built up with Diamond, comic book stores and fans...

More fans, from what’s been said on social media anyway, are like Red Strings and Token than yourself and will appreciate the move.

Watch the bumps when people go out and show support to their LCBS when situations improve and thus show support to the stores.

Yeah, I don't believe that. I don't see this overwhelmingly positive reaction with fans, since the majority of them either just buy digital or don't care either way. This is like if movie studios refused to send movies to Netflix because they're afraid Blockbuster will go bankrupt.

The majority do not buy digital. There's never been official numbers, but it's generally understood that digital is always a percentage of physical sales. Is it growing? Probably, but it will probably never outpace physical purely because comics are still collectable for things like display/varient covers.

Here are 2018 numbers as I'm not finding 2019. I doubt there's that huge of a difference. Even if digital doubled it wouldn't be close.

Wow, the book channel + graphic novel stats are enlightening. I always thought that the way I read (trades bought either in the LCS or in general book stores) meant I was in a massive minority. Clearly not.

I fully understand and support this decision even if I personally will miss my comics.

Hopefully something can be worked out sooner rather than later.

I get Diamonds decision. I even agree with it. Doesn't mean I like it or think the publishers shouldn't see this as a sign to re-evaluate the business model.

Oh I definitely not know the actual reasoning is nowhere near as altruistic as I want it to be, but I'm happy it's happening because I was Comic book stores to live on - they're not just a place for buying comics but they're always such wonderful alternative spaces (within the UK anyhow) and losing them would be a nightmare. It's worth losing a couple months of comics to preserve this heritage imo.

Not to mention the amount of people who have businesses and jobs running them. I seriously don't understand why people are mad about this.

Thanks for those numbers Token, I always wondered what the breakdown was. I think you're right that the decision was made to try and avoid killing off local comic stores (though I bet a lot will go under regardless simply due to being unable to pay rent).

It's probably a good idea to help your LCS by seeing if it's possible to supplement your normal Wednesday stack with maybe a few older graphic novels a week. That assumes they'll even be allowed to stay open I guess.
