Is Armor's power literally derived from her ancestor's souls?

Essentially, yes. It's not a fuel source -- she's not using up their souls in the afterlife to keep her powers running. But a spiritual connection to her ancestral line provides the psychic energy she uses to form her exoskeleton. She received a momentary power surge when her mother and brother died in a car crash because her ancestral line in the afterlife had suddenly grown.

Do we have any indication of how much of her family is alive still? I'm just imagining a situation where she goes to use her powers and notices they're stronger followed by the realization of what that means.

Yes, that's exactly what happened in the situation I described above with her mother and brother. Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #36.

Oof.

I didn't know it happened in a comic. I thought it predated. Thank you for the extra tidbit. Poor Hisako.
