The Tournament

Sign-ups will now be open to gauge interest in a new type of draft. This will be for those less into the creative side as unlike all others this draft does not involve creating a team/title. Instead you will be tasked with selecting combatants to win a series of one-on-one engagements.

The story, which you shouldn't squint too closely at because it isn't the point ;) , is that a civil war has finally broken out on Krakoa between the 'good' mutants and the 'bad' ones. A series of fights will be held to determine the victors, and whichever side comes out the winners will rule Krakoa and all of its resources while the losers will be banished (imagine that somehow it is possible for the island to still function with half the important players absent...). The villains are so ruthless that they enlist the aid of all enemies of the X-Men, concluding they will simply eliminate their own allies afterwards, meaning you will face the entire rogues' gallery of the X-Men and not just specifically mutants.

The way it will work is you will receive the name of an opponent each round via PM. On your turn you pick an X-Man from the list that you believe would be capable of defeating this foe. Note however that it is vital that you choose a hero who is able to win, but not to a degree that is overpowering. This is because you cannot know who you will receive as an opponent next round and you may find you are out of options. For an example using villains who will not appear in the game:

You receive the villain Man-Mountain Marko. You choose Phoenix, hoping she can tap into the powers of the cosmic entity to destroy this foe.
Next round you receive the Beyonders. All you have left to pick is Jubilee. You are f#$*ed.

So the tactical element is that you need to pick winners, but winners who have just enough of what it takes to beat this particular enemy. The game is quasi-cooperative in that you all represent the heroes and need to all keep this in mind and not just try to choose every top pick for yourself. Also, lest you think about throwing a round in hopes of a better match-up elsewhere, part of the rules of the tournament that were agreed on is that any defeated combatant has their mental back-up erased, and every villain is going to fight to the death. Picking someone you know will lose is consigning them to death and you are a terrible person.

EDIT: The game will have a competitive element in that at the end of each round the match-ups will be ranked to determine which is most likely to be successful for the X-Men. At the end will be revealed whose roster was rated as most likely to win the Tournament. This may instead encourage you to choose match-ups that are overpowered in your favor so you easily win. Note however, and I cannot stress this enough, enemies will generally progress from easiest to hardest throughout the rounds. The villains you face first will be your weakest foes, and at the end of the game you will be facing quite powerful opposition. You may want to leave some characters to deal with this...though they are ripe for your fellow players to pick before you!

There will be no special rules. You pick from the list and each character can be picked only once.

The only requirement each round is to select a character. It is optional the degree to which you want to explain why this character will win or to narratively explain how the fight will go. And yes they are fighting, there is no weird Otherworld dance competition or something going on!

All players welcome new and old. One entry per person. Post below if you want to participate or if you have a question.

I'd be interested.

How is it decided who wins the fight? Is there a pre-determined list of all the heroes and villains in order of power, but hidden to the participants? Or is it open to convincing (i.e., if we make a compelling argument why Squirrel Girl can beat Thanos, it can carry the day even if the original thought was no way?)

Do we each share a list or is every individual participant given a squad of X-Men?

I think it has to be subjective. Even with some kind of ranking there is always going to be certain power match-ups that would change the calculus. At the end by general consensus we will determine who has the best chances of success.

It is a shared list as in past drafts.

Oh okay, so it'll just be everyone picking the matchups one at a time, and then only at the very end do we see the outcomes?

Most drafts I feel that the person who runs it could participate in it as well. In fact I have even done so in my own DC drafts.

However, for the first time the draft requires a third party to judge outcomes. I'll be interested to see what everyone's argument for why they should win vs Cable's final decision on match outcomes.

Since the draft is cooperative it is a bit ambiguous as to whether we should be having open discussions on our picks before making them. This really will be an experiment.

I don't plan on making unilateral decisions. After all I might have a grudge against some of you ;) . I was thinking some method of of anonymous polling on the match-ups (obviously you can't vote on your own). I was going to do this at the end but that might be an overwhelming amount of decisions if you have to analyze like 50 fights. So perhaps I will send a ballot via PM at the end of each round.

I've been kicking the tires on this thing thinking about implementing a scoring system and have come down to three ways that this could work:

Originally determining winners of individual match-ups was actually not something I thought much about, thinking we would just give thoughts on overall line-ups at the end. This is because while I haven't actually playtested it out I believe that for a couple reasons the X-Men will come out winners 90+% of the time. First we see the heroic characters most often and think most highly of them. There are of course villains that can wipe out whole teams but they are few in number. Instead ask whether you would place more value on any random member of an X-team or any given member of the Nasty Boys? Or Dark Riders? Secondly, in the game you will always have initiative; meaning that you always see your opponent first and thus can pick the exact powerset to counter their own. Therefore some kind of polling on winners becomes pointless if the X-Men are just winning almost every time.

A way to get around this is a ranked voting whereby each round the match-ups would be ranked by which ones you think would be most successful to least successful. Thus even if X-Men likely won most of them, there is still a competitive element. This however runs counter to the central tactical premise that you should not pick overpowering match-ups; it would instead incentivize picking fights that are very easy to win so they get ranked higher. To partially mitigate this I would change from what I previously planned on being a more random villain distribution to a system whereby everyone is guaranteed to get their weakest foe first and proceed to their strongest foe in the last round (it of course isn't possible to give everyone perfectly equal villains but they are grouped into general tiers of capability). This may possibly result in frustration toward the end but everyone should be in similar circumstances.

A third option is to alter the design in a way that makes the game more difficult but then also causes more variation in outcomes. This would be where the game proceeds as a traditional draft with everyone picking a team one member at a time, though in this case their powers and capabilities would need to be foremost in your mind. Then only at the end would you receive a slate of villains and have to pair each of your team members up against each of your foes. You partially lose initiative and thus unfavorable match-ups are more likely, and then in the end we could judge the winners and losers of the fights.

Let me know here or via PM your thoughts and opinions on the three possible ways of conducting the game
a) original design, no formal scoring
b) modified design with ranked scoring
c) alternate design with end reveal

And of course sign-ups are still open

I think that option C is easiest to understand and implement but option B is the most interesting.

I vote Option B.

I wanted at least 10 players and we are at 9. I will keep sign-ups open for a couple more days and then the game shall begin.

Make sure you have room in your PM inboxes so that when the game begins you can receive your assigned villain.

I have edited the first post to add the modified rules discussed above.
