Drafts of Vengeance

Post by Cable » 13 Nov 2020, 17:10

Welcome to the Drafts of Vengeance!

For the most part, this is going to be one of my standard Marvel Avengers-type drafts (by which I mean all Marvel heroes that are not X-Men). There will be the three special picks I have used previously although one will be very different as I shall detail soon.

What makes this draft different though is that the theme is modeled after the Acts of Vengeance in the comics. This for those who are unfamiliar is when heroes were intentionally set against villains that they traditionally never faced: for example, Thor fought Juggernaut, Dr Strange fought Hobgoblin and Enchantress, Daredevil fought Ultron (no seriously that is really a thing that happened).

How this works is the beginning of the game will be set up via PM. Each player will in turn be presented with a list of villains and choose a few of them to form an evil alliance (whether these are random or make sense in some thematic way is up to you.) This team-up of villains is going to be placed against a team of heroes being drafted by one of the other players. However each player will only discover what villains they face over time as the game progresses. One of these villains is revealed after a set amount of rounds, and then another after another set of rounds, and so on (the specifics to be determined once I know how many players there are). Therefore players may have to adapt their plan as they go as they realize the threat that faces them.

Special Rounds
Loan Pick -- This is available during any round (other than the Free Agent Round) but is mandatory and must be used by the end. This is when you choose a character that has already been chosen by somebody from the list. This character will be on both teams. A character already chosen for a Loan pick cannot be chosen again; no character can be on three teams.

Free Agent Pick -- This option will happen during a specified round. Every player that round will choose a character NOT on the list to join their team. It can be any Marvel superhero comics character whether good or evil, from Prime reality or another reality, X-Men or not. However note that if you plan to pick a villain this round please ask me beforehand because it cannot be a villain that has been selected to face another team. You also cannot choose a Free Agent character that somebody else has already selected.

Transfer Pick -- This is the special pick that will be different this time. A Transfer pick is when you choose a character for someone else's team. In this game, this will be done before the game even starts. As players are choosing villains at the beginning of the game, other players will be receiving a PM with one of those selected enemy team-ups and a list of the heroes. You will be tasked with choosing a hero from the list to face this team of villains (again the degree of thematic sense is up to you). Note whatever hero you choose will be unavailable for your own team when the game starts (also for what it is worth you will know you will not be facing this particular trio of villains yourself). Heroes chosen in this way will be revealed to players alongside the first villain after a set number of rounds.

*Note: As soon as the first villain is revealed, you will know all the villains two other players will face. I can't enforce it but I request that for the sake of the game you please not reveal this information to anyone.

It is up to you whether you want to have all your heroes be a unified team to face the villains together or split them into separate strike forces to face each villain, but the intent is that the villains are allied with each other in their goals.

So you can get D-Man off the list before round one? Intriguing.

I'll go for this as the set up is very intriguing.

Not only D-Man, but also a number of villains you don't want to face.

Count me in, please.

Based on the rules, should I assume the Transfer pick character would be removed from the list of heroes at the beginning and be revealed before the Free Agent pick?

Sign-ups will be open for a couple more days if anyone else wants to join in. New players are welcome.

The game is designed for 20 players and we only have half that number right now. Therefore I think we can actually have everyone run two teams which will make the game easier. Everyone would get two sets of villains and in the end you can divide up your heroes to decide who will be facing which enemy team-up, increasing the chances you get a scenario that fits more to your liking.

Sign-ups are closed and the game shall begin.

Each player will choose two teams of eight heroes. Each team of heroes will be set against a trio of villains.
Which order you pick your heroes in does not matter. You can pick one team first or go back and forth or whatever order you want. You don't have to sort them until the end.

A villain will be revealed every two rounds (not including the Free Agent round, which will be round 9) and the reveal will alternate between the two enemy team-ups you face. Your Transfer Hero will be revealed along with the second villain.
Below is a chart of all the rounds to make how the game will progress more clear:

Pre-Game -- Villains and transfer heroes will be selected via PM
Round 1
Round 2
--First Villain of Enemy Team-Up 1 revealed
Round 3
Round 4
--First Villain of Enemy Team-Up 2 revealed. Transfer Hero revealed
Round 5
Round 6
--Second Villain of Enemy Team-Up 1 revealed
Round 7
Round 8
--Second Villain of Enemy Team-Up 2 revealed
Round 9 -- Free Agent Round
Round 10
Round 11
--Final Villain of Enemy Team-Up 1 revealed
Round 12
Round 13
--Final Villain of Enemy Team-Up 2 revealed
Round 14
Round 15
Heroes assigned against Team-Ups, game is over.
*Loan pick must have been used in one of the rounds other than 9

PMs will start now so make sure your inbox has room. Everyone will be receiving two messages, one to pick villains and one to pick a Transfer hero. People have to pick off the list one at a time so it may be awhile before your receive yours.

If there are any questions let me know.

Is it wrong that I’m imagining the complexity of your Excel spreadsheet for this and it’s making me anxious on your behalf?

I’m super excited for this draft. After the last draft that felt like a creative marathon (in the best way possible), this reads like an equally creative challenge but in a totally different way and I am STOKED.

All villains have been selected and now the game officially begins!

Here is the turn order:

BlackCyclops
WorkForce
JazzKantine
Aeon
Gibbering Fool
Folklore
WorldWideWade
Lavettye
Das_Boot
EphemeristX
Spectral Knight

BlackCyclops you may make your first pick now and as always the draft will be serpentine, coming back up from the bottom in round 2.
Normally BC being on the end you would make two picks at once next turn, ending Round 2 and beginning Round 3. However you may want to wait after your Round 2 pick before you choose again as I will be updating with the first villain.

Below is the character list which will be copied into the first post. Any questions about it let me know. A character listed as one identity can have another if they have had multiple (for example Falcon can be picked and named Captain America). Some identities are specified but if there is one that is not and there are multiple options, you can pick whichever one you want (for example White Tiger could be Hector Ayala, Ava Ayala, or Angela del Toro). Obviously this does not apply if a character is elsewhere on the list (you can't pick Captain America and say it is Bucky; Bucky is on the list as Winter Soldier). Also you can't pick alternate reality versions.

As a reminder the Loan pick must be used and can be used in any normal round.
Also if anyone foresees they will be absent for a couple days as their turn approaches they can PM me a shortlist of characters you want and I will make the selection on your turn. Otherwise you risk getting skipped.

And again for the sake of the game keep your villain selections secret!

Two of the reveals after after odd rounds, which puts you, Spectral, right at the front post-revelation.

Yeah, but that's the end-game. And I still have to pick last... eugh. I just hate being at either end of the list...stuck in the middle suits with jokers in front, clowns behind is where I should be :D
