Omega Red (Mutants) + Shuma-Gorath (Mystics) = The Red Death

Arkady Rossovich was one of the unfortunate souls to volunteer for the Soviet Super Soldier program. After trying their hand at chemistry, robotics, and cybernetics, Soviet scientists turned to one of the oldest forms of metamorphosis: magic. Deep below ground, far from the eyes of god and man, Arkady was one of ten subjects given various tomes to read. Written by the ancient Rotath, the Iron Bound book of the Shuma-Gorath opened a portal to a dark, many angled realm, and Arkady was pulled, screaming, within.

When the portal reopened, the scientists who managed to survive that day all agree on two things. The first was the eerie silence that followed in the unnatural being's wake. The other was the amount of red that covered the walls, the floor, the ceiling.

It was a massacre.

What emerged from that rippling portal was something that was still sort of shaped like a man, but was clearly possessed of something else. Arkady the man's skin had gone bone white, his limbs gangly and twisted, fingers and toes curled in arthritic claws, no longer needed to support his dessicated frame. His hair, gone white from fear, floated around his face like gossamer silk. His mouth was no longer human. It was split vertically, housing gnashing teeth and a flailing tongue that made indescribable sounds. Framing that unnatural mouth was a mass of white, ghostly tentacles, each razorsharp and whisper quiet, rending and entrapping all that unwisely crossed its path. The man-shape floated like a wraith, the air around him smelling of death and decay, the very light seemingly dimmed by its presence, sound dulled to a low thrumming throb. And behind the shape's abyss-bleached pale blue eyes, Arkady's soul was screaming.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, sorry about my disappearing act but life got slightly in the way for a few days. I won't be able to type up my backstories right away as I have a bunch of things to sort out today but should be able to edit with backstories this evening when I have access to actual computer with a keyboard.

My first pick is Lilandra Neramani / Purple Man (Meteorite / Meta) = Lilandriah Killgrave = Byzantium

My second pick is Clea / Callisto (Mystic / Mutant) = Cleasto

I have pretty well thought out concepts for both of these, I just don't have the time to type them out this morning. They will be updated with backstories this evening to fit in with Charles Ocatavius' Octonauts. Sorry, it's been a hectic week.

Im looking forward to catching up on everyone's characters.

Michael Morbius had an early retirement from super-villainy. After running foul of Tandy the Vampire Slayer, Tarot and Blind Faith, he decided to leave his life of villainy behind... until he was approached by a group of scientists who offered to cure him of his meta-activated vampirism.

Morbius jumped at the chance, and was fitted with a secial suit that would allow them to repair his damaged genetic code. Alas, midway through the process, fall out from a major battle damaged the power grid that the lab was connected to, and the sudden spike of energy ran through Morbius and his suit. Fusing with the suit, not only did this not cure his vampirism, but it caused his body to take on an entirely incorporeal form that he could only rectify with great concentration, or after having drank enough blood.

Michael Morbius (Metas) and Ghost (Mortals and Machines) are the Bloody Spectre.

I was going to use Morbius and Sinister in the last draft when I was selecting for HotKnives. I NEARLY went for it again, but didn’t, and now regret it, but it turns out that Ghost meshes well with both Sinister AND Morbius 🤷‍♂️

Well, the last few picks have been a bit gloomy...I think we need a change of atmosphere.

Samuel Bradley was a good ol' American boy helping out his mother Lucinda and his numerous siblings by working in the mines of Cumberland, Kentucky, the same career his late father Thomas, and his long-since retired grandfather Isiah had before him. They were known as a patriotic family, with Isiah in particular being known as something of a war-hero in the town prior to his death, despite no-one being exactly sure of his posting, only that it involved a relocation early in the wars and that there were always black visitors to the town to see Isiah to pay their respects for his service. The mixed heritage of the Bradley family didn't seem to bother anyone in Cumberland, and certainly not Sam, but he knew it wasn’t like that everywhere in the US. Sam had long given up on asking Isiah what he did during his service years, as apparently his memory had simply dulled too much by that time to recall anything of note.

Sam was a gangly, lanky teenage, unlike the physical specimen of his grandfather, but he was a hard-worker none-the-less, and brave too, often volunteering for the riskiest of assignments. His eagerness to serve was fortunate, for his mutant abilities to project an explosive force blast giving him the power of flight at the speed of sound emerged on the day of a horrific cave-in, and Sam was able to blast through the wreckage, saving the lives of many of his workers, including an old war colleague of Isiah's. Unfortunately, Sam's propulsive abilities didn't seem to gift him any enhanced durability, and his injuries were numerous, including severe loss of blood from numerous lacerations incurred in the rescue of the miners.

The only person with a matching blood type in the town was Isiah, who was eager to help his grandson, but was uncertain because of his "differences" - it was only when his old war colleague said it would be fine, and that the accident showed Sam was 'brave and responsible' enough to cope with the responsibilities, did he agree to the transfusion. Sam quickly healed, better than normal, in fact, filling out quickly in the weeks after the accident, and feeling stronger than ever, not to mention getting used to his mutant powers. It was only then did Isiah reveal the truth of his war-time career as a super-solider experiment, and that Sam now had the same peak human biology, in addition to his blasting ability. Sam was amazed at the tale, but also recognised that despite the cruelty Isiah had faced with racism in his service years, there was also an innate pride in being a symbol for Black Americans in particular, and Sam felt it was only right that he too did the best he could for his country.

First enlisting in SHIELD, and then becoming a stand-alone hero in his own right, Samuel Bradley becomes the Patriot Missile, a defender of the American Way, although he demanded some caveats from the US Military. He wanted the same shield that Isiah had taken from him at the end of his term as a Super Soldier, as the ultimate tribute to his grandfather’s endeavours. Whilst somewhat old fashioned in his ways, Sam is also fully understanding of the need for some more ‘aggressive’ actions in the defence of freedom, often being tasked for operations where pro-activeness rather than reactiveness is needed…

Agatha Harkness (Mystics) & Vulture (Mortals and Machines) = Agatha Tooms / Roanoke

From a lineage of the first pilgrims in America, Agatha Tooms was a little girl who barely survived the Roanoke massacre in 1590. Raised by the women of a native tribe, learning the ancient practices and magical rituals, she begun to hate the invading colonists.

Years later she became a warrior woman, und was honored to become her tribe’s Vulture of War. Killing a flock of mad vultures, Agatha build a suit of the dead birds‘ skins and feathers. She enchanted the suit for her to be able to fly, and attacking settlers who mistreated the sacred lands.

Centuries later, Agatha became more than a horror story. Rumor says she is residing on Roanoke Island, wearing a grotesque looking mechanical winged armor, kidnapping people every year at the same time.

Balancing the silly ideas with workable concepts is the hardest part of these drafts. The last two choices have been pretty sensible by my standards so I think I have to throw in an oddball entry in for my next round.

Atlas (Metas)
Nimrod (Mortals and Machines)

Eradicator

Erik Josten-Hunter and his husband Nicholas were working for the joint corporation of Trask-Nova Industries. Erik was a construction specialist, and Nicholas was the head A.I. operation system programmer. The company's current main task was to create android bodyguards for high paying clients. Those androids were supposed to have a probability matrix and a modular adaptive combat and defense system.

During one night shift, when only a handful of employes working, Erik and Nicholas were caught in an attack from militant mutants who tried to destroy the facility. With Erik left crippled, Nicholas was in the middle of a neuro-link which fried his body when the electricity cables overloaded.

Nicholas' spirit awoke in the A.I.'s operation system where he, fueled by rage and sadness, started to build a gigantic android. Withhimself as the andoid's brain and consciousness, and Erik, who has his body transferred into a statis unit, functions as the engine who controls the body.

Forever encased in a cold, steel body, Erik and Nicholas became the gigantic Eradicator. A machine built to kill mutants.

Okay, so here are my write-ups.

Lilandriah Killgrave - Byzantium (meteorite/meta)

Lilandriah Killgrave grew up knowing she was different. From the moment her adoptive parents locked eyes with her, however, they knew she was for them. She spent her early life in Croatia before her father, a physician turned spy for the Croatian government moved the family to the US.

Lilandriah had where hair should have grown, a crown of feathers and, somehow always seemed to know what those around her were thinking. In other words, Lilandriah was a surefire bargaining tool for when The US government caught him. As a result, Lilandriah was, of course, utilised for interrogation and, as a result, she became desensitised to violence and government espionage.

But where did this little girl come from? This cold-blooded being with feathers for hair and hollow bones. This remains a mystery even to the girl herself, her earliest memory is of being surrounded by stars, and the sounds of explosions and people screaming in a language that she doesn’t understand. She remembers an angry face looking down at her, a face she instinctively knows is that of her brother. She remembers another face, a much more kindly face and then she remembers being found in an abandoned metal crib in Ucka Nature Park.

Lilandriah, tired of her abuse from the US government, escaped one day when she was twelve and she managed to use her weak mental powers in order to escape and made her way to Westchester. Here she became friends with a young similarly telepathic boy called Charles Octavius who hid her in his attic and referred to her as his imaginary friend.

This worked well for several months until Lilandriah realised that she was being subconsciously controlled by Charles, she wanted to leave the attic but she couldn’t and whenever she questioned him about it he would simply say he was protecting her.

Lilandriah was angry, she held so much resentment deep inside of her and, of course, the US government soon found her. After a chase which spanned all through New York City, with her and Charles running away from the agents together, they ended up in a chemical refinery where Lilandriah showed her true colours, using Charles as a human shield against the bullets fired (which would cost him the use of his legs), she fell into a vat of chemicals that turned both her skin and her feathered crown purple.

This chemical similarly seemed to enhance her telepathic abilities and, noticing the crumpled heap that was her friend Charles she freaked out and started to run away. Charles immediately utilised his mental powers to try and stop her, get her back under control but Lilandriah was done with this man, the chemicals had done something to her, enhanced her abilities and she simply uttered the words “No, you will never do that anyone ever again!”

Charles’ mental powers were gone, or blocked, and Lilandriah escaped after murdering all of the government agents. Now, decade(s?) later, she is a wrecking crew against the US government and nothing will stop her from dismantling the patriarchy. She has amassed a small army of mind-controlled (she would describe them as persuaded) drones and is the arch enemy of Charles Octavius who she considers to be the worst man of them all, the man who accepts no blame.

Callisto / Clea - Cleasto (Mystic/mutant)
Cleasto was a sorceress born in Faltine yet was raised in modern day New York city. She doesn’t remember her parents much, only that her mother was very beautiful and looked almost exactly like herself. Her parents disappeared when she was a very young age and she spent much of her time in orphanages where she was known for frequently disappearing (sometimes for days on end). She was pegged as a nuisance, a runaway, but would always claim that she’d simply been going to her ‘special place’. Little did anyone now, that special place was the other dimension known as the Faltine.

As a kind and caring young woman growing up in New York poverty between orphanages and, eventually, homelessness when she aged out of the system Cleasto was both angered and devastated at the treatment of marginalised groups in the world she lived in. Mutants, homosexuals, immigrants, ethnic minorities all of these marginalised groups had her empathy and she soon started ferrying them over to the Faltine, her own little world, from a portal she had opened in the NY sewers.

For a time she and her Faltine dwellers lived in absolute harmony, a group of misfits, discriminated against by the world around them. But it wouldn’t last, one day they were attacked by The Red Death and all of the occupants (hundreds and hundreds) were murdered in one brutal attack with Cleasto being the only survivor.

Traumatised, she escaped The Faltine and went catatonic until her magic abilities attracted the attention of Charles Octavius (specifically when she was able to grow a garden of glowing plants throughout the hospital she was sectioned at). He visited her and he helped her, he learnt from her and it was this meeting that convinced the two of them that the world needed protectors and Cleasto became both the co-leader of the Octonauts and Charles Octavius’s wife.
