Writing challenges

Post by das_boot » 30 Jul 2019, 23:52

Just a thought... but there are threads on forums like Reddit that include writing prompts.

How would any of the folk still here feel about a monthly writing prompt challenge? I’m not sure how I’d work it, but thought this might be a good way to gauge interest and maybe get the fiction section alive again?

As someone who has been toying with the idea of doing fanfic for ages now and always found it too hard to find where to start, for whom the closest he came was writing short little stories in the betrayal game on this very forum and had a blast doing so.

As that person.

I am interested.

I'd totally be down for that. I've been kind of stuck in a rut in general lately, but especially writing-wise so being given a prompt to run with might help me get some confidence back in that department. It's a great idea.

The way I see it running is that every round (maybe have it last a full calendar month), someone volunteers to host. There’s two themes to choose from, one that would be fitting for that month (so, a horror theme for October), and one other random theme that’s perhaps something as abstract as one word. Submissions are taken for the full month and then posted on Uncanon and participants review one another’s work (constructively, of course).

I want to get back into writing, so this could be a good chance for me to it. I'm historically flaky about it, though, but I do miss flexing my creative muscles.

Realise this is a quick turn around, but how about these for August’s themes:

-REINTRODUCTION— Marvel have greenlit a relaunch of Ultimates to take place in the modern age. Write a one-shot, introducing a character of your choosing into a world in which heroes, villains, Mutants etc are only just becoming public knowledge

Or

KIDULTHOOD— a one-shot adventure of a former teen hero (literally, any teen hero) trying to become a legitimate adult hero.

Would we submit these things here? Would we create a thread? Or will this be on Uncanon itself?

Oh, sorry, i’ll create a gmail account for submissions, I DID used to have one for Uncanon but haven’t used it in years so don’t think it exists anymore

Edit because I realised I hadn’t answered the question.

I’ll post them on Uncanon

Great idea! I'm working on my own book atm(YA, superhero themed). I learned a lot about writing right here. People like Das(especially Das!) were a huge factor in my growth/confidence as a writer. Not only do they inspire writing, but their feedback really taught me a lot about HOW to write. So yeah, great idea and if you like writing, I encourage it 100%

Hope I can get something in!

I'll start a thing, give up, and stare at it sadly.

I always wanted to try my hand at writing.

I am working on something for this (and am glad that the prompt was well within the scope of what I was hoping to work on; lucky me). That said, hopefully the creative parts of my mind choose to participate in this attempt.

is kidulthood also supposed to be marvel based?

Guys, you have until the end of this week to send in any submissions for August (mostly because I’ve been super busy and forget to check things like email for the last week or so!)

September’s options for the writing challenge are as follows:

FIRST DATE: So, this could be two established characters who’re going on their first date together, or one established character going on a first date with someone. Doesn’t have to be in continuity at all, just you do you.

And, because alliteration...

SPIDER-MAN SEPTEMBER: Do you have a solo Spider-Man one shot in mind? Or perhaps a team up? Either are fine!

I've been in a decade long RP of Sam Guthrie/Theresa Cassidy relationship. This might actually happen.

So, I had plans for the First Date subject. It's been in my head forever, but I've never been able to figure out how to START a story. It's always been a sore spot for me as most thoughts of starting always feel so stiff and I worry it comes off awkwardly.
