Persona 5

Post by das_boot » 05 Feb 2018, 14:02

How, in this forum full of nerds (and I use the term affectionately, I love you all like people i’m vaguely related to and only see at holidays and funerals), isn’t there a thread for this MONSTER of a game?

For those that haven’t played it, it’s a JRPG that’s equal parts “The Sims” and equal parts disturbing jungian psychology heist dungeon crawler and is the antidote to AAA games with a mega budget that only last about five hours of gameplay for £60. It’s AMAZING.

For those of you who have played it... let me guess: you’ve gotten near to the end and realised you’re going to need to new Game+ that bastard in order to unlock everything? I LOVE IT.

I've heard alot about this game and came this close to buying it when it was on sale the last time. Alas.

Out of everyone on here, I was actually expecting you to be one of the ones who’d be into this!

Played it, beat it, letting it simmer before I jump into NG+ before I start it up again.

Absolutely fantastic game and I loved every character. My only gripe is the last 5%ish can feel like a drag, but it's worth it.

It's a visually stunning game with some great characters and fun social aspects. You're definitely going to need to play through it multiple times unless you follow a guide because there's so much to do.

I wonder if this game avoided controversy just because of how niche it is.

I don’t even think it’s that. From what i’ve read, ther Persona games tend to be very controversial. This actually seems quite tame compared to some of the previous instalments in the franchise (other than one of the monsters in the final dungeon that just straight up looks like a penis).

Fox confuses me. Sometimes I think that the writers are trying to imply that he’s gay, then other times, not so much.

I only played some of 3 and never got around to 4, but I was surprised the relationship options didn't cause something of a stir.

Are you talking about, specifically
Spoiler: show
the adult characters and also the support girl? Because i’ve read online that they were intending for Futaba to be autistic and therefore not a romance option initially, but then thought they’d get more negative press for not allowing her to be a romance option than if they did. It’s still creepy that your teacher comes over to your house in a maid’s outfit and essentially propositions you for sex, however.

Yeah
Spoiler: show
I couldn't romance Futaba because she was so much of a little sister character, but the teacher, reporter, doctor, and maybe fortune teller? It gets awkward. I saw a review about it a while ago saying these weren't bad because video games are about escapism.
I really wish I could get a JRPG similar to this with adult characters. Catherine was the closest I've seen.

I absolutely adored Persona 4 and I finally setup my PS4. Decided to play through South Park Fractured but Whole first but will definitely be taking 5 for a spin soon.

So, resurrecting this from the ashes because I’m playing Persona 5 Royal at the moment (just up to the end of Okumura’s palace/the space ship).

I haven’t looked ahead to see what the plot changes are (so far, fairly minimal), but I HAVE been following a guide to get 100% confidant ratings etc, and I got to the back end of August/start of September (so, the period between Futaba’s palace and the set up for Okumura’s, including the random Hawaii trip) and the guide messed up— so far, I’ve maxed out all of my social stats about three weeks ahead of schedule, I’m ahead on two of the confidants but behind on four despite following it perfectly and having personae in my stack that correspond to the matching arcana of those confidants to boost the social link gains... and I also accidentally romanced Ann, which, lovely, I’m an Ann fan, but I would have preferred Makoto...

This is now my third play through of the game (including the standard edition) and while I’m still obviously really enjoying it, including the two new characters, the play through I’m following is really demanding— it basically requires you to secure the treasure route on one visit for most of the palaces (exclusions being Madarame’s palace where you need to alter his cognition to proceed past the halfway point, and Okumura’s where the goal is to basically recruit Haru, train her up in Mementos, and then go back to it). I was really surprised at how early in the game you can potentially max out at least three of your party to unlock their “legendary” personae, and I think this is the first time I’ve actually progressed as far as I have along the tarot reader’s plot line and the teacher/maid (which is turning out to be absolutely clutch in terms of getting stuff done after a trip to the palaces/Mementos)

I really enjoy the new areas too, the darts bar and the jazz club are nice little touches, and the game’s version of Tokyo just feels so vibrant and nice.

Overall, if you enjoyed the first game, this version gives you a new take on it— between the grappling hook puzzles, extra treasures to find in the Palaces, and some totally new Personae to collect, this is everything I wanted from an enhanced edition... but it’s still a total time sink. I know I still have three palaces left and I’m at the 85 hour mark on this game (I started playing at the start of December and with us being locked down again, I’m actually surprised it’s only 85 hours), so if there’s anyone who was on the fence about this but currently find themselves with an abundance of time? Totally recommend.

Ha, I'm playing Royal too, Daniel(though altnerating between that and Nier!). And a "100% guide" messed me up too(They told me to read a book that never told me to get in the first place :().

I'm loving Royal though. I'm kinda skipping through some of the story beats(mostly confidants that I dislike, like the creepy teacher/maid) because I've been there and done that but gameplay wise, the changes they've made are huge quality of life improvements. And I love the battle rounds you can do in Velvet Room.

I've never beaten the game(I stopped at the Casino because I DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL) but this time i plan on finishing.

Omg, we might be using the same guide— i literally messed up ONE day, hadn’t saved in ages, said I should have been able to complete the Big Bang Burger challenge, failed miserably, and then they were relying on the fortune teller’s stat boosting ability to get stat boosts BEFORE YOU HAD UNLOCKED IT. Bastards.

The Casino is probably my second favourite Palace! Also, I only wanted Joker to date Makoto so I’d have Sae as my sister in law because she is an absolute BAMF.

I'm using the Gamer's Gyude 100% guide. Or was. I'm only half following it now. I still think I MIGHT be able to 100%...hopefully.

I can't talk to Makoto right now as I'm not Charmed Rank 5 :( . But she's the one I choose too, only because I only want a party member and Anne's confident storyline is...weak. But yes, I also love Sae. Im excited to see what happens with her AFTER the Casino.

I do hope Persona 6 lets you romance both genders(and possibly pick your gender). Time to evolve a bit Persona! Maruki would have been a nice option haha.

Pass.... a friend once tried explaining the game to me, by describing it as a group of thieves who access the astral plane to steal treasure from cognitive (hallucinatory?) castles belonging to some villains. Apparently being robbed from shocks them into confessing all their crimes, and also the characters have to interact socially, which seems awkward because as at least one of them is a talking cat? I swear I'm not making that up!

Said talking cat also happens to be a trans character, as he is clearly male but also based on Morgana La Fey. Acocording t the erson who told me all this, the talking cat character is apparently very popular among the furry community... Not sure how my friend would know this, and I was really concerned about said friend, but he acknowledged himself that he was sounding like a meth-head or a ravaging lunatic. Well, for all I know it may be an accurate description of the game, but it doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

So, I finished this game and I’ve actually had to take some time to digest the ending, in particular the final semester.

This was equal parts heart-breaking and hopeful. However, it’s taken me nearly 200 hours to complete (collecting all the stamps in Mementos, and also spending nearly a full six hours just messing around in the Velvet Room to almost fill the compendium (I think I’m at around 94% completed). This is such a powerful narrative about whether or not someone who has the power to alter the entirety of reality, is it morally correct for them to do so? Ugh.

Persona 5 has been one of my favorite games of the last decade without a doubt.
