Ant-Man And Wasp: Quantumania Trailer!!!

So on one hand we have the existence of a being who can reset the entire timeline, destroying everything…, and on the other hand we have a few mind wipes and some gaslighting. You're right, totally evenly weighted.

Spoiler: show
Based on previous casting, I wouldn't be surprised if Bill Murray is another of the Elders. Challenger/Explorer/Father Time maybe? And hopefully a version of the Micronauts (minus Bug, of course)

Huh, didn't know we were getting this today. Nice! Looks great and the first time I've been excited for an Ant-Man movie.

Gotta say, Majors brief scenes as Kang stand out. It’s giving EMH Kang.

Definitely has a different feel than Thanos and Loki and I dig that.

It looks massive, almost epic in scale, which given it's at quantum scale...

I hope we still get some of the grounding of the first two Ant-Man movies. I loved how there was a real family vibe to them both, and whilst Cassie is obviously going to be a big part of this I hope we still get some of that realism too.

That said, I'm excited to see Kang be Kang. HWR was a bit dull, so this should give Majors plenty of scenery to chew as the Conqueror

Any news on if Luis or Kurt will be appearing? Pena's Luis in particular is one of my favourite original MCU characters.

Watching it again, and there's something about the way Janet says, “There’s something I never told you” that I find just chilling... I really can't wait for this!

With Cassie's role in this there is more buzz about a Young Avengers movie. One of the producers shoots this down by saying that is not something they have planned.

Early reviews are not good... shame because I was hoping this was the movie that was finally gonna set things on a good path again after a lackluster Phase 4.

At least it sounds like Kang is great, so that's some hope.

It is getting bad ratings but at least it still has a higher score than the Eternals!

At the time I wrote that, it actually was lower than Eternals on RT.

Right now Quantumania is higher on RT... 48 critics/84 audience, whereas Eternals is 47/77. Eternals is higher on metacritic though (52/6.2 vs 49/4.6).

That audience score is pretty high…

I would not trust the audience score at this point. The IMDb distribution right now is not natural, which is often the case when a fandom is trying to change a perception. A normal distribution for a movie that audiences really like looks like this or this with many 10s and few 1s. A movie that audiences think is alright tends to resemble a bell curve like this or this.

If Ant-Man has that many 1 stars then it should not have that many 10 stars. It looks artificially boosted, or there just aren't enough scores to balance it out yet (diehards would go see it first and are more likely to love it than a general audience).

Really debating seeing this in theaters or waiting for the Disney+ release...I love Majors as Kang, and generally really liked the Ant Man films, but I'm just not vibing with this one for some reason? Kind of like last year, wasn't vibing with a lot of the releases, other than Wakanda Forever, which even then I went to and really liked but wasn't particularly excited about. I need a little Marvel film break I think. Bring me the X-Men! Lol.

I am, however, going to see The Marvels in November. Y'all let me know if this is worth a theater ticket!

I doubt you will regret it. Eternals is the worst MCU movie but it isn't like it is unwatchable or something lol. A lot is just expected of Marvel Studios because they have had such a high hit rate. This movie will be entertaining.

I imagine once I see critic reviews I may see the the flaws.

Until then, I absolutely go with the audience score. This was GOOD! I'd probably put it right at Far From Home. It didn't have the "Holy shit" moments but it Kang was probably the best villain since Loki. I definitely enjoyed him more than Thanos, which I'm sure will be a controversial take.

I was worried the third installment would lose its charms by becoming an interdimensional war epic. Thankfully Quantumania is thoroughly entertaining escapism, which is no small feet thirty-one films deep into Marvel territory. Its flaws were suitably miniature.

Watched it yesterday afternoon, and it was good, but not great.

My main gripes is what it isn't rather than what it is, I know the priot Ant-Man movies don't have the same plaudits or some of the other MCU sub-franchises, but I loved them both because of their grounded, smaller scale and tight human focus. This might be in the Microv... I mean Quantum Realm, but it's a much, much "bigger" movie, closer to a GOTG than either of the two previous Ant-Man movies and doesn't feel thematically / tonally as part of the same series.

Rudd's Lang is still great, Douglas' Pym is genuinely FUN (in fact compared to the comics, it feels like Hank and Jan have had personality switches) so the Ant-Man side of the equation is good. Lilly's Hope is a bit blander here I'll be honest, I thought this was a step down for her with not a lot of chance to show any sort of personality at all. Pfeiffer's Janet, whilst being polar opposites to comics Jan, was more watchable but I wonder how much of the film could've been avoided if she wasn't so withdrawn and actually talked to her family a bit more. Also, whilst Pym still feels like Ant-Man, albeit an older hero who uses his communications with his ants to keep the link to his former identity, I don't think Jan feels like she's an older Wasp if that makes sense, rather than a more generic rebel fighter.

Majors was MUCH better as the Conqueror than HWR, much more intense and very watchable. Newton's Cassie is... okay. I liked her, but I wasn't as drawn to her as some of the other young women we've seen debut in the MCU over the last couple of years. Her scenes with Rudd were lovely though, just wish we had more of them.

More spoilery thoughts:
Spoiler: show
Can I say, I really missed Dave, Kurt, and mostly, Luis. Luis in particular is one of the most memorable non-super characters in the entire MCU and not having him around is a major bummer.

Whilst there were some laughs in the QR characters, I thought the whole Rebellion thing with the freaks and weirdos wasn't particularly enthralling. I just didn't really care about them, kinda forgettable other than the ooze guy.

Darren Cross becoming "not-a-dick" MODOFK was hillarious. Stupid as anything, but very very funny. Him becoming an Avenger in his sacrifice? Sublime. Although how did he know Lang was an Avenger anyway, as he hadn't become a member of Cap's outlaw Avengers until after Cross had gone to the Quantum Realm, or Avengers proper until his return in Endgame. Odd.

Kang being exiled by Kangs was a nice touch...! Plays into the inter-variant clashes he's known for.

Rama-Tut and Immortus! I am guessing the third variant in the council was Scarlet Centurion but that was less obvious or effective in its costume.

Victor Timely - is this an alias from the comics? When I saw Victor I instantly thought of another Victor who may / may not be linked to Kang.

Ha, I was just saying almost this exact thing to a friend who hasn't seen it yet. It's not bad, it's just not up to the quality level of previous Marvel (and definitely not Ant-Man) movie standards. The acting was overall great (I'm still not sure about this Cassie), but the story is all over the place. Something that confused me the most was:
Spoiler: show
Bill Murray has to demand a pretty big price for movies. If you're going to pay that, why give him a 5 minute mostly non-comedic part? And some answers to your questions, SK: Yes, Victor Timely is an alias from the comics and the third member of the main Council is Scarlet Centurion. And I'm guessing Kang told MODOFK enough of what's going on to keep his hatred of Scott stoked.

I saw this Monday! I loved it! Definitely not sure why it's getting reviewed poorly - it seems to me that viewers liked/loved it but critics found it wanting. Power to the people, I say.

Spoils abound, including mid- and post-credits scenes:
Spoiler: show
Janet
LOVED her. Pfeiffer was sensational. She's such a talented actress, it was so great to see her continue being a total legend. She gave Janet some much-needed gravitas and I adored her.

Scott and Cassie
Rudd did great! Some folks missed the heist elements of Ant-Man's past, but how many times can they really get into that kind of trouble? I loved Cassie too - she brought some really good energy to the ensemble. And the bond between Scott and Cassie was palpable.

Kang
I have been waiting for this since Loki season 1 ended!! So great to see Majors back!! He was chilling at times and I really loved seeing Kang proper grace the screen! I found his story really interesting. That moment where he was like, "I am KANG; you talk to ANTS" was incredible lol. Seeing the Council of Kang (Dynasty of Kangs?) at the end was suuuuper satisfying!! If this Kang really did die, as Immortus, Rama Tut, and Centurion seem to think, then I'm very curious as to how and/or which variants might play a bigger role in this multiverse saga in the future. However, we all know the rules: no body, no proof. I for one am not convinced he's dead and that this Kang in particular will continue to cause major trouble and devastation, but they can do whatever they want with this, and I'm excited to see where it all goes! And I found the Loki season 2 footage fascinating!
This year's releases are right up my alley: this, Guardians 3, the Marvels, Loki season 2... I'm loving all of this! :D

I expect that
Spoiler: show
this Kang really is dead, but we'll get an essentially identical one going forward. There were plenty of Kang-esque guys in the stands at the council.

I can definitely get why some critics wouldn't have liked it tbh - it's not without it's flaws.

I dunno, a few days after first watch and I'd like a second viewing, but my main concerns is, it's almost too 'big' of a movie for Ant-Man - with the sense of scale of the Quantum Realm being all funky and wide-sweeping and the alien CGI quality of everything, there's not a lot that grounds you, and it really depending on the emotional conveys of the leads. And it's good from some of the cast, and but less so from others (Lily was virtually wallpaper in this), and I think (as a big Ant Man 1 and 2 advocate) it just doesn't really feel as if it's part of the same franchise.

There's a Stan Lee quote about Ant-Man that is pretty apt
In order for Ant-Man to be successful, he had to be drawn this small next to big things and you would be getting pictures that were visually interesting. The artists who drew him, no matter how much I kept reminding them, they kept forgetting that fact. They would draw him standing on a tabletop and they would draw a heroic-looking guy. I would say, 'Draw a matchbook cover next to him, so we see the difference in size.' But they kept forgetting. So when you would look at the panels, you thought you were looking at a normal guy wearing an underwear costume like all of them. It didn't have the interest
Because of the alien quality of the Quantum Realm the weirdness became the interest and threat, rather than normal stuff becoming weird, interesting or dangerous because of the change in scale between Ant-Man / human size / Giant-Man scale. (Think of the bath scene and the transitions into the night club and running the vinyl decks in Ant-Man or the kitchen fight scene in Ant-Man + the Wasp for what I mean by this!).
