Oh I was gutted too! While reading in front of a bunch of students during independent reading time too, lol.

I think the world is fascinating. Love LeGuin's "rules" of magic too. And the whole time I was reading it, I kept visualizing it as a Netflix series. I think it would translate really well to a visual medium, especially now that fantasy is taken a bit more seriously. I think there was some version of it filmed some time ago, but I don't think it was very good.

I just finished reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. I really liked it, though the ending left me a bit sad

I read the first three books recently after watching the show. They are pretty great, even knowing what's going to happen. The writing pulled me in immediately, so i think it's fair to give the first book a shot and you'll have a good idea if you'll like it within the first 5 or so chapters.

How do the books vs show work? Are they the same or does it start to diverge? And does each season cover a book or do they cover multiple ( I know the show only got six seasons compared to nine books)?

The six seasons of TV cover the first six books (and although I haven't gotten there, i have heard there is a natural stopping point at the end of book six, so don't feel like you are getting short changed if you only watch the show). But it's not always a 1 for 1 relationship, especially for seasons 5 and 6 (i heard season 6 is short because a lot of the sixth book was covered in season 5). The first three books align nicely with the first three seasons though.

Also, there are a bunch of changes to the show to support a consistent ensemble cast. Outside of the main core crew, most characters come and go in the books, but the show keeps a consistent cast across all seasons. This means, for example, writing scenes for Book 2 characters into Season 1 to introduce them earlier, or merging multiple book characters together into a single character for the show. I watched the show first, and going back through the books is a lot of fun because there are "new" characters whose stories I don't know and still provide good suspense. Both the show and books are top tier Sci-Fi for me.

"Marvel By Design"

It's a fairly hefty large format tome looking at the graphic design of Marvel - lettering, logos, colour palettes - all sorts, including a chapter dedicated to the Dawn of X rebrand. It's the first book I've seen that considers the techniques, impact, and influences of comics from a perspective solely centered in design.

Some of the artwork reproduction looks better than Marvel's own work - it's beautiful

You ever stop dealing with a media for so long that the first thing you've read seems AMAZING? That's how I feel right now reading Noor by Nnedi Okarafor. It's not that I'm not enjoying it, but it's been so long since I sat down and read a physical book that I was surprised by how engrossed I got in it.

I've heard that about Dune! I've always wanted to get to it, but just haven't for whatever reason. And I currently can't tell if I'm more in a sci-fi mood, or fantasy. Thus needing the help lol. Thanks Cable!!

The original books by Frank Herbert do get progressively more bizarre. Personally I love them all but at the very least you should read Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor of Dune. Those four completely develop the philosophy of the series.

I finished the first book and enjoyed it. I like political intrigue in my sci-fi/fantasy and this definitely delivers that. Though I was bummed my favorite character dies, but hey it was a fitting way to go out! I already pre-ordered the short story collection releasing this month and now I will start the show.

Rian Hughes - XX | A Novel Graphic

What started as a signal from space story has veered off into an exploration of memeification, ideas, and shared narratives. It's also got tonnes of "material" beyond the basic prose, like fictional scientific papers, screen grabs, wiki articles, book reviews etc. Probably not even a third through it yet, but it's a bit of a tome.

I’ve just started “The Nobody People” by Bob Proehl. It’s basically an alt-U X-Men title without it being X-Men. I bought it on the recommendation of Jay and Miles and from listening to their interview with the author and immediately the prologue is kind of a dark mirror to what could have happened had a certain fan favourite mutant been outed as such in a small community (it’s not a subtle homage in the slightest, with identical first names and a VERY similar surname, but I shan’t spoil). I’m only a little way in, but I’m enjoying it so far, but I’ll wait until I’m finished it and it’s sequel before I recommend it

Finishing my second read-through of the novelizations of the first two Ghostbusters films, they were re-released a few years ago as a 2-in-1 edition. They make for very interesting reads as besides getting more detail and background on smaller characters, 1 specifically was based off an old shooting script and includes scenes cut from the main movie (but seen in DVD extras) or scenes never shot (the containment unit viewing port scene) that give you a sense for how the movie almost was. Plus some tweaked dialogue.

I find the pacing really weird for the first one too.

I’ve just got to the point where Avi’s just found out his daughter is ONE OF THEM (which was telegraphed to hell but still), and honestly while I get there’s likely an element of psychic nonsense afoot, it’s the acceptance of all of this at face value that’s jarring.

Back from the Future: A Celebration of the Greatest Time Travel Story Ever Told by Brad Gilmore.

It's a fun pocket sized retrospective of the series. As an uber-BTTF a lot I'm already aware of so far, but Gilmore's passion for the series and the light-heartedness of the read makes it a fun read. That I'm reading whilst I'm also working my way through the latest LEGO release of the DeLorean with the soundtrack pumping on the Alexa also reminds me just how much I love these films and characters.
