I'm reading Dune for the first time. It's about what I expected...

You expected it to be the greatest novel ever written?Anna Raven wrote: ↑09 Oct 2020, 05:10I'm reading Dune for the first time. It's about what I expected...
Well put together all of his original Dune novels into one work and I would give it that.
Best Comics of Week 2
X-titles: SWORD #2 by Al Ewing (1) and Valerio Schiti (1)
Non-X titles: King in Black Thunderbolts #1 by Matthew Rosenberg (1) and Juan Ferreyra (1)
In parentheses number of times creator has had best comic of the week this year

Re: what are you reading?
No I expected to be let down because everyone says that about it and I had a feeling I would not agree just based on the movie.
No I mean I get why it was revolutionary at the time, and I can see how it inspired a lot of the sci-fi people know and love today. But to me it's just kind of a dry, bleak, bland, dystopian future with no charm or mystery or sense of wonder. Even Blade Runner which is bleak and dark has this mysterious, seductive quality that makes it intriguing. Dune, to me, is literally like the planet it is set on: nothing but dry, sandy, bleakness for hundreds of miles. I'm going to give it a full shake and read further, but it's not my cup of tea, sorry.
Having said that I get the hype, I really do. Like I said it's just not my style.

Re: what are you reading?
Token, the book flew from my hands and hit a wall. I literally cannot remember the last time that an event in a novel hit me so hard. I’m actually really so... almost betrayed, honestly.

I've avoided spoilers for the book, but I knew immediately when it was coming. I've been listening to the audiobook and I'd just gotten home when the moment happened. I sat in my car and just let the next chapter play before finally heading inside.das_boot wrote: ↑09 Oct 2020, 23:24Token, the book flew from my hands and hit a wall. Finished and it ended about how I expected. When read together the two books feel much better and complete.

I watched a YouTube interview with James Marsters and Jim Butcher, and Butcher stated that book 25 is the end of Dresden, but he wants to pick up a series featuring Goodman Grey. I know he wants to do something for Grey and something for Maggie as well. He’s also mentioned he’s probably adding another book to the series to deal with the aftermath of Battle Ground.

Rian Hughes - Logo-A-Gogo
I sort of stumbled into finding this book, but Hughes' body of work in designing comic logos and masthead brands is enormous yet fairly unknown when discussing comics (at least as far as I can tell).
Good read for anyone interested in graphic design or typology. It's fun seeing all the concept development work that goes on that doesn't get to print.

What can I say? I'm just full of good ideas.
As someone who dips his toes into some graphic design, it's amazing the patience and consideration that is shown in developing commercial mastheads. It's a lovely book full of ideas and visuals.

A Crown For Cold Silver by Alex Marshall was great, except I didn't realize I'd need to read two more books when I picked it up.

My recommendation was so vague though.

Re: what are you reading?
Okay, to be more accurate, your recommendation made me check what people had to say about it on Goodreads, and after automatically excluding the negative reviews that were filled with typos and mostly complained it was too long, I decided to buy it

Re: what are you reading?
I've decided to read First Blood by David Morrell. I saw a thread on Reddit about how different John Rambo was in the first movie versus the rest and I found out that it was a novel. The first movie was quite a bleak and moving film about how soldiers lose their souls for the government, and how these trained killers lose everything but their ability to kill. If you've never watched the first movie, you might be surprised.
