Song of the South offends because, like EphX said, it's contextually insidious but Peter Pan, yeah, that one feels kinda wrong without any history lesson lol...

Having watched both episodes of American Gigolo, I gotta say Bernthal is such a great actor, I really really want him to join the MCU. And I wouldn't mind if they kinda glossed over his Netflix origins and just embraced more of his comic book stuff...particularly the more recent stuff. I think he could be such a terrifying presence next to a character like Moon Knight or would be such a great team-up with Venom.

Re: Re: Random Thoughts
As far as I can tell, it isn't explicitly stated. The only context I can remember is the fact that the father is a writer and he "isn't very liked" by the citizens of Atlanta and it might potentially put him at odds with his plantation-owner mother.Cable wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 13:56But it isn't the Antebellum is it? As I said I have never seen it but my understanding was it takes place after the Civil War is over.EphemeristX wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 13:13I can't speak for any black Americans on how it must feel to see the Antebellum south glamourized on film, but I can say that within the context of the film itself, the offensiveness mostly stems from context rather than content.Spectral Knight wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 10:36
Hmm, I'd be interested from a historical perspective but also slightly wary of just how offensive it is.
Also, the anthology films in the Disney canon are generally a bit meh. Saying that Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah is a classic Disney song.

After three days I am fully moved out of my apartment and set up in the marriage house. Just need to unbox and organize everything. It is starting to feel real now. Just thankful the internet service was moved over without hassles. I hope everyone has been good and healthy while I have taken my eyes off the board.

That's why I keep a copy on my hard drive. It's like I was saying a while back about Splash Mountain being re-skinned to remove the SotS references in favor of Princess and the Frog, it was long since overdue even if the ride focused on the less-offensive parts of the movie i.e. Br'er Rabbit and his misadventures. If you are going to deep-dive into a discussion on Song Of The South, you should have first-hand viewing knowledge. IMHO.Spectral Knight wrote: ↑17 Sep 2022, 10:36Hmm, I'd be interested from a historical perspective but also slightly wary of just how offensive it is

I am. It helps I am on work-vacation so the past couple days I have been in the house all day. And having my cat with me. Though coming back from the grocery store I did "miss" my turn and try to go back to the apartment due to habit.das_boot wrote: ↑19 Sep 2022, 13:04Happy new house! Oh, I’ve absolutely walked to the wrong house before after moving. I wouldn’t have been mega bothered if it wasn’t for the fact that I was literally on the other side of (an admittedly small) town

I highly recommend the TV series Wedding Season for people who like British humor, American assholery, mystery, and plot twists.

Just read through Rolling Stone's latest iteration of the "100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time", and my word...Fleabag is top 5 (?!) whilst shows like Mr Robot and Red Dwarf... and Only Fools and Horses don't even make the top 100. Also, complete lack of documentaries, so brilliance like Blue Planet are completely ignored.
Very, very odd list.

Re: Re: Random Thoughts
Rolling Stone isn't even good at reporting on music, let alone anything else. I remember reading a piece they did in which they claimed Led Zeppelin was the "heaviest" metal band of all time. Forget all time, they weren't even the heaviest of their OWN time considering they were concurrent with Black Sabbath! Bafflingly stupid article.

Re: Random Thoughts
And Led Zep aren't even particularly heavy, any way.
(That said, I'd say, from a complete technical novice, that another contemporary in the Stooges sound WAY heavier than Led Zep, but are typically not considered metal at all)

Yeah, there's a lot of 'Really?' when reading that list. It's great that 'I'm Alan Partridge' is on there though.Spectral Knight wrote: ↑27 Sep 2022, 05:02Just read through Rolling Stone's latest iteration of the "100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time", and my word...Fleabag is top 5 (?!) whilst shows like Mr Robot and Red Dwarf... and Only Fools and Horses don't even make the top 100. I love Fleagbag but definitely wouldn't put it in my top 5 or even top 20 shows of all time. But its actually proven to be influential, so maybe that helped? But Top 5....thats a stretch of stretches.
Mr. Robot though? I always found it to be sleek but pretentious and probably would've worked as a three season of 6 episodes each.
I can't believe Girls is on that list. I feel like critics enjoyed the show for a season before tearing it up all the time.
But at least they out the Americans(best show no one watched) followed by Halt and Catch Fire(second best show that literally no one watched)

The Americans and Halt and Catch Fire are brilliant…I’d love a show about Russia set during the civil war after the October revolution.
In my headcanon, I typically don’t compare comedies to dramas (unless it’s a dramedy.

Yes, and to my surprise. If ever a comedy screams Britishness, it's Alan Partridge. It's not my favourite sitcom by a country mile, but that's strong showing for this list.P-90 wrote: ↑27 Sep 2022, 14:31Yeah, there's a lot of 'Really?' when reading that list. Re: Re: Random Thoughts
Mr. Robot had some wobbly in-between seasons tbh. It did have Joey BadA$$ so it gets points for that though.
But I get that some shows just resonate with some people. Like not everyone liked Lost or Mad Men but Lost was so much fun as appointment TV on early Web 2.0, that I’ll always love it. And Mad Men just resonated with me…like The Wire and Chernobyl.
