Is Johnny Cash's Hurt the greatest music cover of all time? In terms of taking the original and just elevating it through the stratosphere. Though I admit it requires the music video in conjunction for the full effect. And it is sort of a unique circumstance with how close Cash was to the end of his life.

I'd add some possible contenders, but in the end I agree Hurt takes the prize.

Re: Random Thoughts
It's good, but vastly overhyped in part because of when it was released. As you mentioned, the video and the obviously frail nature of Cash at the time really serves as a bookend to his life and career that I'm not sure is conveyed purely through the performance.
I daresay Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U made a forgetable Prince song an absolute stone cold banger, and I say that as someone with very little time for either artist's overall output, but the sheer emotion the daft skinhead puts into this is awe inspring...she was mad as a box of frogs, but no question she belted this one out.
As to *my* favourites. Clash - I Fought The Law, Carter USM - Rent, the Who - Summertime Blues, Primal Scream - Urban Guerilla, Manics - She Sells Sanctuary (performed live; Wembley Arena), Charlatans - Ever Fallen in Love (Live; as a tribute to Pete Shelley it was beautiful)
Edit: Anna mentioned the Sundays!!! Never thought any poster on here would give them props let alone you. Kudos sir

To be fair, I don't know a single other song by the Sundays, but I just love that cover.
Bringing up Prince though, this might be more of a tribute than a cover, but the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction performance for George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps, performed by Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, and Prince - that's another one for the ages.

The most interesting thing about Prince was when he wasn't Prince and was that silly symbol instead. I just don't find any of his music particularly interesting at all.Blackcyclops wrote: ↑24 Nov 2023, 20:21The fact you call anything forgettable by Prince just lets me know how unseasoned you are SK, respectfully.

Re: Re: Random Thoughts
I appreciate that you were asking a genuine question here and open to checking out now music but it was also a funny thing to say. Just because being someone my age and being Black, those one name people are as recognizable to people in my demo as Elvis, the Beatles or Michael Jackson is for the gen pop.
And so Whitney=Whitney Houston, Luther=Luther Vandross, and Mary=Mary J. blige lol…
Whitney remade Dolly Parton’s “I will Always Love”, which is basically to Black people born before 1995 one of the greatest love songs of all time. Whitney also sang thenonly version of the US National Anthem that Black folks of all political leanings will acknowledge lol..
Luther meanwhile sang remakes of classic 70s singer Dionne Warwick that became so well known that a generation believes he originally sang the songs. These include: “A House is Not a Home”, “If Only For One Night”, “If this World Was Mine”, and so on. Actually alot of the hit Motown Era soul songs were technically covers since the artist shared them like that.
And finally Mary J. blige covered hits like “I’m Going Down”, “Sweet Thing”, and “Our Love”.

I knew Whitney Houston obviously and I figured Luther meant Luther Vandross, but I had no idea who Mary referred to. I feel like that could have been a lot of people no offense.Blackcyclops wrote: ↑24 Nov 2023, 23:57

My problem is I rarely know if a song is a cover or not because I don't follow much music. I just listen to the stuff I like lol
I do like Faith Hill's cover of Piece Of My Heart and Jolene by Sherrie Austin
For pure soulful sad song credit, even though it's not a cover, I love Jamie O'Neal's "There Is No Arizona"

Other great covers include:
-Zombie by Bad Wolves (originally by the Cranberries)
-Sound of Silence by Disturbed. Actually, Disturbed rarely miss with their covers which is awesome.
-There’s a version of “Get the Party Started” mashed with “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics which I love
-Shining Light by Annie Lennox (originally by Ash and she channels Dazzler HARD in the video)
-“Love” by Chvrches (originally Kendrick Lamar)
-“Beat it” by Fall Out Bot (originally by MJ duh)
-“As” by Mary J Blige and George Michael (originally by Stevie Wonder)

Re: Re: Random Thoughts
"Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is one of my favorite covers that hasn't been mentioned ("Nothing Compares 2U" and "I Will Always Love You" are also up there), though I love the original version by Tommy James and the Shondells. By the way, if you've never taken the time to listen to the Tommy James version, please do. It's delightfully trippy, especially the final version of the chorus.
A bunch of covers that I think completely replaced the original in the musical ecosphere:
"Respect" by Aretha Franklin. Otis Redding is a legend but Aretha completely reinvented that song into the feminist anthem it is today.
"All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix -- Bob Dylan is a fabulous artist whose songs all sound better when someone else sings them, imo.
"Proud Mary" by Tina (and Ike) Turner. The CCR version is still a classic but c'mon, it's Tina fuckin Turner.
And then there's "With a Little Help from my Friends" by Joe Cocker (originally a Beatles tune). Although both versions are still popular, they might as well be different songs.

Teenage me from back in 2001 is compelled to shoutout Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal.
Knockin On Heaven's Door by Guns N Roses is another example of what you are talking about. The cover is far superior and I think has replaced Dylan's in the minds of most.EphemeristX wrote: ↑25 Nov 2023, 19:21

Pathfinder (2nd Edition in my case) is fun but kind of weird. I'm in two tabletop campaigns. One of them is PF2e and the other 5e. They're extremely different beasts. PF2e is so much crunch.
