High fantasy, but only because of the oversaturation of steampunk in pop culture that happened five or ten years ago. Plus, I much more prefer other -punks. Cyberpunk is still cool, but I also really dig Atompunk and Solarpunk. Solarpunk, especially, because it's the biggest -punk departure.

Clean energy future, lots of plant-life integration, a focus on sustainability and community, and it's often based on an African aesthetic. It's kind of a bucking of Western Capitalist society and an answer to the problems raised in cyberpunk. You could call Black Panther solarpunk, for instance, even though it's a monarchy.

Here's a TVTropes article.

Eph summed it up pretty well. Milkshake with coffee flavoring and some chocolate drizzle and it is wonderful.

At their best, which do you more enjoy to read/watch: steampunk fiction or high fantasy? Explain…
I like the aesthetic of Steampunk, but I much prefer either High Fantasy or Urban Fantasy

High fantasy. I'm a Lord of the Rings stan and a D&D junkie. Steampunk is fine, but no one's ever crafted a true steampunk masterpiece in my mind.

So, I know Madalyne Pryor is not technically Nate Grey's mother, but did no one really look and just... "What the fuck?" him when they brought up putting Nate Grey in a relationship with her? Like, yeah again, not technically his mom... but that technically is pulling a whole lot of weight.

What is the reason that Marvel has sort of stealthily gone to a bi-monthly release schedule for so many comics? By my count there are 14 ongoings that will just skip the month of May. I think there were about a dozen that skipped last month. Are these still disruptions caused by the pandemic or is this a new normal going forward?
Best Comics of Week 18

X-titles: Hellions #11 by Zeb Wells (4) and Stephen Segovia (4)
Non-X titles: Heroes Reborn #1 by Jason Aaron (2) and Ed McGuinness (1)

In parentheses number of times creator has had best comic this year

Maybe it's just a good time of year for the creative teams to take a breather. Avoid burnout. I'd like a long-term release data set over the past few years and see if there is any pattern to "small release months".

Last I heard it’s still disruptions caused by the pandemic and Marvel switching to Penguin.

It was cancelled before it's time, but might I suggest the Cliffhanger comic book named Steampunk, written by Joe Kelly, drawn by Chris Bachalo. It's a fun book, reveling in Bachalo's chaotic, messy, late 90's artwork. It stars lovestruck fisherman Cole Blaquesmith, who makes a deal with a medical-devil to save his love, only to awaken 100 years later with a steam-furnace in his chest. a giant metal arm, and no idea what's going on. Its probably a chaotic mess to everyone else, but I really enjoy it.

Ok I'll check it out!

I'm not saying there isn't good steampunk out there. I just don't know anyone has ever written a truly transcendent work of Steampunk fiction. The closest to it is probably 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or Journey to the Center of the Earth, but to Jules Verne that was science fiction not its own genre!

Bloody hell, how long have you been in the pub game for? It's been a loooong time right?

I wanna see how you're getting on with the Wacom...! Do share.

(Talking of creative projects, I'm seriously thinking of giving Zbrush a go - it's seems a lot less 'techy' than other 3d modelling programs, and Core Mini is a freebie product).

ZBrush is pretty techy, imo. Mudbox on the other hand is fairly simple. Technically neither of these are modelling programs, they are sculpting programs. The difference being you don't create a model from the ground up, but rather, take a shape that already exists, and sculpt into it like clay.

The end result you will get from a sculpting program with look pretty amazing if you know what you are doing, but it will be millions and millions of polygons, so it's pretty useless unless you've built what's called a "low poly" model in one of the modeling software packages first. The point of the sculpt is that you "bake" that texture down onto the low poly model so that it's actually useful in a game engine, or able to be rigged for animation.

Sorry if I am techsplaining stuff you already knew, but when you referred to it as "modeling" software I wasn't so sure.

Not tech-splaining at all...! I'm not clued up on lots of these things, often stumbling in the dark for my own curiosities.

From your perspective, do you see modelling more based on 2D drawings that are then extrapolated then (like AutoCAD)..?

What I've seen from a couple of demos of Zbrush which sounds really cool is the idea of 3D moulding and painting in a 3D space rather than skinning (like I used to do on Freedom Force YEARS ago) on a 2D plane and then wrapping a model. I've played with AutoCAD for some work things (blocking out basic stand layouts and stuff).

The other reason I might have a play around Zbrush with is it's less necessary to plan the model from the off, and it feels a bit more 'playful/experimental'.

Do you know if Zbrush offers the opportunities to compress to low-poly? (I'm guessing the more detailed texturing is then reduced down to a bump map for more efficient rendering?).

AutoCAD is definitely a modeling software, it's just a type of modeling software that's highly technical and mostly used for engineering and architecture these days.

Blender, 3DS Max, Maya are also modeling programs but they are slightly more accessible than AutoCAD. They still have a required learning curve though.

ZBrush is primarily a sculpting software although you are right, it does allow for painting directly on a model rather than painting a flattened, unwrapped texture map in Photoshop. However, there are cheaper, easier softwares for that purpose than ZBrush. Substance Painter and 3D Coat for example.

If you want to just have the fun of playing around with a sculpt, I still think you should start with Mudbox, then go to ZBrush once you feel you've mastered sculpting.
