Aww, I like Bounty chocolate, but I'm a coconut-nut. Celebrations packs are pretty good yeah.

I'm Gremlin in this equation - everything but Bounty for me. Though right now I'm on a low-carb diet, so no chocolate at all. (It's been 20 days now )

Bounty bars are great, shame I've not seen the dark chocolate version in the shops in years though.

I'm an ignorant American. I eat my Hersheys chocolate. Then again, my sense of taste is muted anyways compared to most folks. So I'm not taking sides in any chocolate debate.

I don't know anything about Bounty but in the US if an advent calendar started with say a Mounds or Almond Joy I too would riot in the streets.

Bounty is a chocolate bar like Mars, only with a coconut cream and shredded coconut pieces

I envy those people who are able to eat more than one Bounty bar. It’s so sweet and the coconut fragrance and taste is very present, combined with the chocolate.

I tried Hercheys chocolate and to me it tasted a bit like sick.

We get a bit of American chocolate here, not a massive amount though. I like Reece's Pieces because peanut butter is my favourite thing. The chocolate is really gritty though. Do you cut your chocolate with sand?

Meanwhile in the UK...

LOL - brilliant story, made my day! Although it has made me remember I forgot my advent chocolate this morning... eugh.

It's funny, a lot of Brits don't like Hershey's, yet I find it goes down a treat. Hershey's almond Kisses are the one.

(As a kid because my grandad was ex-US military, we managed to get onto a military base to buy US groceries that were very rarely available over here... it's still almost impossible to find Chewy Chips Ahoy in the UK, for example, which I was a total mark for growing up).

Thanks to all that gave candy suggestions. I went back yesterday and I got the Terrys Chocolate Orange. We don't have Galaxy so I got a Galaxy Caramel Collection bar. I also got a Bounty Bar and for a wild card something called Fry's Turkish Delight. They actually had no Cadbury bars there, just Cadbury Drinking Chocolate. Salt and Vinegar chips are one of my favorite foods so I also got some called Kent Crisps.

I went over to Germany too and got candy there. Many of them are widely popular in America (Werthers, Haribo, Toblerone) but there were some that were unusual so I got a Viba Duo praline bar, Ritter Sport biscuit bar, Milka Caramel bar, and Kinder Chocolate bar. Also got a potato snack there in sour cream and onion flavored Pomsticks.

I will let you know how they are when my wife and I try them. I also dropped $100 on weird Japanese snacks so we have much to go through lol

OMG I didn't even realise that Werther's were German originally... the marketing is very old English grandad gent orientated over here, so I've always assumed they were British. Did they not have Kinder Eggs in the German section? (It's been 2 and a bit years since I went to Epcot and as we were in Orlando for a friend's wedding we did the round the world drinking tour rather than the snack shops) - Kinder Eggs are a staple over here, far more so than the actual Kinder bars...

Turkish Delight is grim, and it is actually Cadbury's made.

Yes, they still make them, though in German they are called Überraschungsei. (surprise-egg)

The German Werthers advertisements function the same way, there's an old guy in an armchair describing his first Werthers experience, his grandfather handed him his first treat and he had troubles unwrapping the shiny paper etc. and it Eeds with him saying that he is the gradfather now, and then he hands one to his grandson.

Yeah, the brand name is Kinder Surprise over here, but they're known just as well as Kinder Eggs...!

I always was disappointed as a kid when you got a stationary statue / figurine rather than a build-it yourself toy. It was the construction element of putting together tiny pieces of cheap ass plastic that made it fun. Also, in retrospect, probably a massive choke hazard for children.

No eggs but they had something called Kinder Hippos that my mum-in-law got. I will have to try one of those as well.

As a child I was pretty good at detemining by shaking and listening wether it was a built-it-yourself toy, a random figurine OR a special, limited figurine that usually came in sets of six to seven, and were produced for only 5 to 8 weeks.

IIRC Kinder eggs were banned in the US for something like fifty years, only recently has the ban been lifted. I'm sure they said on the show Q.I that the eggs were one of the most often confiscated items when crossing into the country from Canada and Mexico.

That's dedication, Lavettye.

Yeah P-90, apparently they still are banned in the US, falling under legislation dating back to the 30's, but they've got a similar (but markedly different in terms of construction) toy/chocolate combo called a Kinder Joy, where the toy and chocolate are actually separate halves.

They sell Joy in Europe too during summer months, instead of the surprise eggs.

It's funny because the one thing I think most people know Turkish Delight from is Narnia, and based on its usage in that book you would think it's something worth selling your soul to get it.

I had some when I was a teenager after reading the Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe and all I can clearly remember is it had some kind of gelatin like consistency and was covered in powdered sugar. Definitely nothing to write home about. Edmund was a moron.

That's not quite the Turkish Delight we were talking about. Fry's Turkish Delight (made by Cadbury's) is chocolate covered Turkish Delight

Also, remember the historical context of the novel. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was set in WW2 when rationing affected all confectionaries, and tonnes of other products in the UK.
