CSBG

Post by Nu-D » 28 Aug 2016, 13:20

Just want to express my annoyance that the Comics Should be Good blog has been folded into the CBR main page, and the comments section has been replaced by Facebook. Now I have to wade through "articles" that are nothing more than adverts to find the real writing. And there were great conversations in the old comments section, but I won't participate in the new comments because it's Facebook.

Indeed. I followed Brian Cronin's various columns on there (especially Urban Legends Revealed) and it took me annoyingly long just to find his material. So not cool of CBR.

I still haven't found the full archives we used to have of all his various columns. But at least Cronin is still doing his thing.

It looks to me like there are no archives publicly available of the dialogues in the comments on the old columns. You could use the Way Back Machine, but that's only got snapshots of some pages, not full archives.

That new layout is the perfect example of how to ruin a perfectly good page. What was their thinking?

They were thinking that they could increase their advertising dollars by consolidating all of the traffic to one front page, instead of having two pages, one with lower traffic and one with higher traffic, each driving different advertising rates.

Let's say CBR got 60,000 views a day, and CSBG got 40,000 per day. If the pricing is $.03 per view on a page with fewer than 50k views, $.04 per view on a page with 50-100k views, and $.05 per view on a page with >100k views, it makes sense to combine them all and get that higher rate for each view.

Then consider that 99% of the "articles" on the CBR site are just adverts for upcoming comics and movies. All the "previews," are just dressed up solicits. I don't know if there's a formal profit incentive for CBR to push those articles, but that's their line-in-trade. Bringing readers of the CSBG blog over to CBR makes it more likely we'll look at this vapid content. Previously, I never looked at that stuff; I just read informational columns and reviews at CSBG, much of which is devoted to out-of-print material that offers zero profit to the publishers. Now I have to sort through the contemporary dross--stuff that the publishers want me to see--for the stuff that I'm actually interested in.

If Marvel and DC say, "hey, nearly half your traffic skips right to CSBG and never even looks at the articles pushing our new stuff," then CBR has to be thinking they should get that traffic over to where their bread & butter is located.

And on top of that, the site has always been glitchy, causing my browser to crash (shockwave flash) with some frequency. That problem doesn't seem to be resolved with the new design either.

well I ain't looking at that dross. I bookmarked the page of "every article written by Brian Cronin" so their front page is not my concern.

I hate the new front page. It wasn't bad before as it was easy to scan down the articles. But now it's just so in-your-face.

Yeah, the new look/format stinks. Cronin's column(s) and the Robot 6 blog were about the only reasons I had left to even go there for I have little interest in checking out previews/spoilers. Oh well.

Apparently there are too few comics readers to make sites like CBR worthwhile anymore so they are trying to reach a more mainstream audience.

That's a good strategy, but you'll miss out on a bunch of goos stuff that used to appear on CSBG--Greg and Kelly's columns, the art mashups, etc. Cronin wasn't the only talented columnist on that blog.

Update:

You can go to the Comics Should Be Good facebook page. It's a feed of links to the articles that used to appear on the CSBG blog. It filters out the dross from the main page.
