Most likeable?

Post by das_boot » 12 Mar 2023, 18:16

So weird question that came out of nowhere in my brain:

Who do you think, in universe, is the most likeable super-hero?

Like, I’m talking when all the heroes are meeting up for drinks and whatnot, there’s either not a single other hero who’s like “UGH, THAT PERSON”, or if they are, they’re in an extreme minority.

I kind of feel like it’s Luke Cage. I feel like he has definite “yeah, he’s a solid dude” vibes and generally gets on with everyone. I also feel like this would apply to Nightcrawler, and possibly also Karma but I feel like her power alone might freak some people out.

Also I’m obviously not counting villains in this, they’re likely to be salty about most heroes.

As I was reading the first few sentences, Nightcrawler definitely came to mind first. He's, like, everyone's best friend in the X-Men lol. I hear you on Luke Cage too.

I'm thinking Jessica Drew might be up there too. She's always had this sort of personality/sense of humor that attracts others. Maybe also Cannonball?

I’d say Luke as well…I think Steve is likeable when NOT actually fighting. His solo series show him to be a kind and gentle artist (a Colossus but less melodramatic).

Nightcrawler is a great pick too.

Jessica Drew is 100% definitely a girl’s girl too…

I’m going to add in for the younger generation Miles and Kate too…I feel like Miles is basically a less annoying Peter Parker and so that makes him very good to get along with.

Miles is a good shout, as is Kate and definitely Kamala. I feel like everyone who meets Kamala is immediately put in to a mindset where they’re like “this is my little sister and I will DIE for her, but don’t tell her because she’ll write a fanfic about it”.

Jessica I TEND to agree except for the fact that she was a spy and has pheromone powers. Like, I kind of feel like while everyone probably likes her, at the back of their mind they’re probably also super dubious about whether they actually like her or it’s her pheromones at play.

Miles for sure. I think that the other heroes probably actively ask Peter why he can’t be more like Miles lol

Kurt, Luke, and Jessica Jones are great picks so far.

Ben Grimm is another one for certain.

Everyone seems to bend over backwards to help Misty Knight when she comes calling. Everyone from Daredevil to Iron Man seem to have an immense amount of love for her.

I think most people not named J Jonah Jameson like Peter Parker. Miles might be younger and cooler, but Peter is the guy you really come to love once you get to know him.

Firestar seems to give off a "she must be protected at all costs" vibe. She's beloved by both the Avengers and X-Men and she has three gal-pals who moved heaven and earth to see her through her cancer treatments, in Black Cat, Monica Rambeau, and Hellcat.

The thing is that Peter can be annoying as Spider-man to the other superheroes. It’s like a toned down Deadpool situation…they don’t inherently dislike them but they just play too much.

Ben Grimm is 100% a great pick. And Misty Knight is another great addition to the list.

She-Hulk and/or Ben Grimm have been described as such.

SHE-HULK! Of course! Although I imagine there’s also an element of “we might need a good lawyer at some point and Daredevil’s likely to get himself disbarred at some point” there too.

Thing, absolutely. 100% down with this.

@BC— I kind of agree with Spider-Man— I also feel like most people who aren’t Cable will absolutely claim to hate Deadpool until they’ve had a few drinks and then he’s their BEST FRIEND

Ben Grimm - doesn't he essentially hold the Floating Super Hero Poker Night license? He's a social ringleader!
I'd have said Sue Richards ahead of Carol. Carol is definitely more fun, but I think Sue has this matriarch of the Marvel Superhero vibe - like no one wants to disappoint her thing

Nightcrawler - probably amongst the X-Men
Amongst the X-Women, it's really tough. I think Rogue is VERY well liked amongst the X-Men (after her initial hurdles) and can be respected leader or the fun one but I don't think this translates across the wider MU. Even after her time on the Unity Squad, she doesn't feel a central part of the broader superhero community and there was a lot of grudges there for years.

I know she is very young but would Lunella Lafayette (Moon Girl) count?

The superheroes who interacted with her are probably being nice to her because she is so young.

I mean… I feel like it’s slightly different with characters like Moon Girl, Molly Hayes, and to an extent, Cassie Lang.

With Moon Girl and Molly, their age is likely to make people incredibly protective of them— that’s not the same as liking them, but I could imagine that any of the characters you could ever attribute “momma bear” energy to would go WILD if they thought that a villain had specifically targeted them with the intent to harm or kill. Emma, Sue, Jean… those three alone realistically, I would HATE to see what they would do to a villain who hurt Lunella or Molly. Add in characters like Wanda, Tigra, Spider-Woman… yikes to that villain— but being super protective of them isn’t the same as liking them as a person.

Cassie I can see being slightly different in that any of the Avengers who’ve worked with Scott have likely met her at some point, and I can imagine them being SUPER protective of her too. I think with teen heroes there’s a very distinct difference between caring about them and their safety, and actually liking them as a person, if that makes sense?

I think it feels like there is a VERY specific set of reasons why more villains don’t just go for the beating heart of the hero community and try to kill the inexperienced teen heroes— and that’s because of what the adult heroes would do to them as a consequence. Avengers Arena/Undercover kind of touched on this (but I suspect with no mutant children other than Laura being kidnapped by Arcade, this kind of fell off Emma’s agenda and also aware I’m marching directly off topic on my own thread no less 🙃), but could you IMAGINE how dark some of the most well-respected heroes would go if a child hero was harmed or killed? YIKES.

Anyway, yes, I think that Lunella and the younger heroes are fairly well-liked, but I also think there’s an element there where they’re liked because of how protective people feel over them, and not necessarily how much they like them as people

I think some would see Steve as self-righteous and it would rub them the wrong way.

I don't know how many heroes he is acquainted with, but I don't think anyone would dislike Silver Surfer.

Actually I think one of the core characteristics of Silver Surfer is that he is so alien that many people don't actually like him. He is kind of the equivalent of a character who is so noble and purely good that he can't actually relate with normal folks, especially since (at least before he met Dawn Greenwood) he didn't really understand human social cues and customs. I DID appreciate the Allred run of Silver Surfer that succeeded in making him 100% more approachable, but even so - I think it takes a special type of human like Dawn to accept him fully.

Surprised no one has said Iceman yet. He’s always been depicted as the nice, everyman that everyone can get on with.

Just like Madrox, not a lot of X-characters and characters in general like Iceman due to his immaturity, goofiness, tendency to crack jokes, make fun of everything, etc.

When you wrote this, I immediately thought of an alternate timeline story where X-23 was a grown woman and she got really annoyed with Iceman.

Iceman crossed my mind but I felt like he’s quite similar to Spider-Man in that people would either see through the quips and humour being his coping mechanism and that he’s a good guy, or would be infuriated by it. I also feel like since coming out there’s probably a fair few of the folk who were annoyed by him previously who’ve had very firm “ahhhhh that’s what that was about” moments and actually understand where he’s coming from better now.

Also, has anyone mentioned Cannonball yet? I feel like Cannonball’s the right combination of eager and earnest for people to be endeared to him— in the words of Jay and Miles “Cannonball is the BEST kid”.

I can see how people might be put off by Iceman’s quips and jokes.

Cannonball is a good shou, Antibody mentioned him earlier. Sam is quite benign, no major personality faults other than coming from the ye-haw part of America.

I’ll also add Lockjaw as basically the MU’s best friend.

Kate Bishop has an overconfidence that can be grating to some people, but she generally wins them over after a while. Nobody dislikes She-Hulk but I could see some people (not many) put off by Ben Grimm's gruffness. Mary Jane Watson gives off a great vibe that people want to be around but Spider-man/Peter Parker are flaking on everyone way too much for anyone to fully like. People also really seem to respond to Spider-gwen and while I'm sure plenty of people would hate him I think Hercules would be super fun to hang out with.
Books to be excited for:
Immortal X-men, X-men Red, Legion of X, She-Hulk, Rogue and Gambit, The X-cellent

I feel like with Kate, I can see that she could grate both powered heroes her age, and non-powered heroes older than her, due to her confidence.

Certainly in her earlier appearances her confidence came across as arrogance, but I feel that’s actually been tempered over time and with experience. I definitely feel like other teen heroes her age would have questioned why she was so confident when all she had was a bow and arrow, and I think the non-powered heroes older than her probably questioned where that confidence came from when they could pick apart flaws in her technique and abilities.

Now? Oh yeah, loveable angel.

As for Hercules? Oh yeah. Popular with the ladies and gents, I hear 😏

I am super surprised nobody said Storm........

Storm is amazing and she has a good reputation behind her name.

She is well-known throughout the Marvel Universe.

She is bold, brave, confident, strong-willed, kind, beautiful.

IDK, it seems that she leaves and makes a good impression on others everywhere she goes.

I can see some ladies or people in higher power (like Gabriel/Vulcan, for example) being intimidated by her.

Ladies can be intimidated by her for her looks, intelligence, energy, boldness, confidence, regalness, etc.

People of/in higher power can be intimidated by her power level, strength, voice of authority, etc.

Storm has a "striking" appearance everywhere she goes.

(Pun Intended)

Do you all think so?

Storm is a character, in my opinion, that once you talk to her once you think she's one of the greatest people you know, but from a distance she's borderline Emma. People walk around calling her a goddess. That's going to rub people wrong.

Nightcrawler is definitely the answer for the X-Men. I'm agreeing with everyone who says Cannonball. One of the best things about Sam is, at the end of the day, the dude has no baggage. Like, yeah, his dad died when he was a teenager and that sucks, but he's just so damn well adjusted that you feel good around him.

I also toss Johnny Storm in. He's very much in that Spider-Man/Iceman tier.
