Captain Britain #1 and Roma

Post by nathanadler » 13 Jan 2019, 01:35

In Captain Britain #1 Claremont had Brian Braddock chased to the stone structure (where he first encountered Roma) by the crimelord Joshua Stragg, otherwise known as THE REAVER. In Excalibur #2 built right near the stone structure was a ruin which housed GATEWAY Technologies. Directly after he had Roma relocate the sacrificed X-Men to another sacred site guarded by a "Gateway" and tormented by the Reavers. Since there are no such things as coincidences in the writing of Claremont, anyone wonder what he was establishing here, that is, having two "Gateways" and "Reavers" at two separate locations on the planet Earth, both watched over by Roma?

While Roma would later end up named that by Steve Parkhouse in his Black Knight strip that ran in Hulk Weekly, given Claremont referred to her in this issue as "The Lady of the Northern Skies" it seems extremely likely he would have gone on to name her Arianrhod, after the Celtic goddess. That is, in the Book of Taliesen, Arianrhod lived in Otherworld's Caer Sidi, a revolving citadel in the northern sky lit by the northern star. If that doesn't suggest the "Starlight Citadel" I don't know what does.

I had an original copy of Captain Britain #1. Complete with freebie mask. Probably my top 'claim' to an issue of some renown.

I would say when reading this the first time around, and subsequently, I never once had the same considerations you did.

You say there’s “no such thing as coincidences,” but CC has recycled names before. Most notoriously, “Maddie Pryor” was given to a girl in Avengers Annual #10 and reused not to much later for the character we all know. CC has explicitly stated they were never intended to be the same character, and he just liked the name.

While I think CC was a great writer, I don't think he's some superhuman mastermind that calculates that far ahead. I agree with NuD, I think some things are coincedence or were ideas he just kinda made and never fully thought through at the time.

As fun as it is the speculate I think Claremont just liked the names and used them again. Also, back in those days was Captain Britain a Marvel UK only comic? Was it released in the US? If not then it could be possible Claremont didn't think many eagle eyed readers would make the connection?

I'm pretty sure it was UK printed only. Not sure if those early Marvel UK issues were ever distributed on first printing in the States (I know the much later early 90s titles - Death's Head II, Motormouth and Killpower etc. did go via the specialist retailer route in the States).

He didn't just "like" the name, it came from the lead singer of one of his favorite bands called Steeleye Span, and in UXM #238 Claremont actually refered to that band in a narration box during a scene where the Genegineer had Madelyne telepathically interrogated. On the astral plane Madelyne envisioned herself as a little girl wearing the same dress as that girl in that Avengers Annual and even used a similar line of dialogue (I was sick, but I got better.) They are clearly not intended to be the same character, but Claremont gave a nod here to the name's origin as well as him being aware of having used it twice.

Nu-D, I just reread Avengers Annual #10 and maybe I missed it but, Madelyne Pryor was not mentioned... You have pics?
