Queer Comics

Post by manuel_mc89 » 27 Apr 2017, 19:05

Hey everybody, since i read Virgil and Nimona and Midnighter and Apollo, it made me realize that i want to read more queer comics, prefferably as the protagonists, and im talking aobut queer people being the heroes of the story, like a Prince rescuing a Prince, do you have any recommendations? It can be in books too.

Strangers in Paradise. Start from the beginning, and give it time.

It doesn't quite fit your definition but Y the Last man has quite a few lesbian characters, IIRC.

Strangers in Paradise is about people with fairly fluid sexuality. Katina is bi-sexual, with a strong leaning towards lesbian. Francine is either straight-ish & bi-curious, or closeted so deep she doesn't know she's not straight. David is straight. They're all in love with each other.

The first three issues, v1 #1-3, are comedy and super fun. But the title really hits its stride in I Dream of You v. 2, #1-9. That's where these characters really start to deepen and grow. It maintains a very high quality through v. 3 #24, including high points in Sanctuaryaround #17-20. It meanders in the woods for a while after that, but with a fairly strong finish.

This title will bring you to tears.

Joyride from Boom! Studios, I just finished reading it, it's a sci-fi space adventure with a dash of dystopia. I loved it

Thaks for the recommendation Wings, ive noticed that apparently Boom Studios and its imprints like Boombox are very inclusive, i really like it, im checking Joyride out, and maybe Backstagers too.

And im definitely cheking SiP out, i see is by the creator of Rachel Rising, wich i have yet to finish but i loved at the time.

If you like Simon Spurrier's work (X-Men Legacy, X-Force, The Spire) he tends to feature a lot of queer leads in his books. His current Boom! offering Godshaper has a gay lead and his Image book Cry Havoc has a lesbian main character. I'm not really sure if Cry Havoc is still going, but Godshaper just started.

Chip Zdarsky (Star-Lord, Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man) had a brief creator-owned book called Zaptara from Image Comics that I thought was a lot of fun and whose star was a gay man of color.

There's also the very strange InSEXts book by Marguerite Bennett for Aftershock Comics. It's about victorian lesbian human-eating insect lovers. I thought it was quite good but honestly I ended up not keeping up with it. That book is still ongoing btw.

Another one I haven't kept up with is Merry Men by Oni Press. It's a very gay take on Peter Pan's lost boys.

Hope that helps!

The Wicked and the Divine plays around with gender and sexuality too. Out of the majority of the characters there’s at least four bisexual characters, one gay, and one transgender. While sexuality isn’t exactly a major role in the narrative, it’s just a case of “this is Who they are”
