Empyre: Avengers #0

Post by Quick and Dead » 24 Jun 2020, 19:47

Might be due to Pepe Larraz’s art but I loved this. Worked great as a event prologue and as someone who hasn’t read the original Avengers stories involving the Kotati and Celestial Messiah stuff, I think this and Road to Empyre did a fantastic job explaining things in a concise and entertaining way.

The Tony Stark internal monologue was a bit heavy handed in trying to convince readers that this was a serious threat but I’m sold and can’t wait for more.

It’s Ewing and space...so of course I was going to love it.

If this can be for space operas what War of the Realms was for fantasy epics, then Ewing has a new age classic on his hands. Plus just like Aaron had Dauterman, having Larraz is a blessing.
Morrison Era 2001-2005, Decimation Era from 2005-2012, Bendis Era 2012-2016, M-Pox era 2016-2017, and Resurrxion 2017-2019, Hickman Era 2019-?

Not sooo into the art. But overall I liked it and I am always in for classic Avengers.

Sequoia‘s redesign is a bit ... strange. He looks like that plant Pokémon with the roses.

You mean the Roserade line.

I didn’t hate this but I haven’t been reading Avengers and have no idea what’s happening. Why is Jen acting like the normal Hulk?

Because she is an independent strong woman, that’s why she looks and sounds like the Hulk. Sorry, male Hulk.

It happened in Aaron’s run at the beginning. She was overdosed with additional Gamma energy. Not sure if you missed much. He killed the Celestials, the Eternals, nearly Stingray, killed Starbrand, has Vampires in it, went to Hell with the other Ghost Rider, the new Starbrand is a toddler girl...

Spoilers for Immortal Hulk.
Spoiler: show
They're hinting that Jen actually died during her fight with Thanos and that she was brought back in much the same way the Hulk has been and Leader was.

To be honest, there was no lead in to this whatsoever in any of Aaron's Avengers run. Empyre's story arc really started in the Incoming one shot and the Road to Empyre one shot.

Probably the closest outside of that would be Meet the Skrulls.

I wasn't sold on the idea of this event and I wasn't sure how much of Empyre I was going to get. I did not get Road to Empyre. But I did end up picking this up and dang it Ewing manages to make it compelling. I enjoyed the trip through history behind it. With the cosmic stuff I am more interested in the grand scale of the stakes than the character involvement, but ultimately we get compelling hints of both.
